Topic Dog Boards / General / Random Question...

Hi, I'm new to these forums although have been reading them for a while now.

Anyways, a question, or really a 'has anyone ever heard to this before' kind of thing

Whilst in work the other day, I was talking to the owner of a boxer (7/8months) and their vet had told them not to let him get at any bitches for, if he did mate any at his age he would stop growing?!  Now personally I thought this was rather bizarre as I have never heard of this being the case.  Has anyone else ever heard this.  I can understand why you wouldn't want to let him at such a young age for a variety of reasons but becuase the dog would stop growing??  sounds rather crazy to me

Has anyone else ever heard anything like this or has the person I was talking to maybe got the wrong end of the stick so to speak?

Your friend needs to find another Vet!

What a load of twaddle. :)

now thats what i thought!  Where I work I hear a lot of random things from people (well being a pet shop you can understand some of the things i hear can be nuts) but this I thought was just well...down right bizarre lol

I agree, twaddle is the word. :-D

Just as a thought, are you sure it was the vet, and not one of the nurses or receptionist? I've heard some laughable things from them before.

Probably even more accurate is that the person was only half listening and has infact got the wrong end of the stick, I just can't imagine a vet saying that. ;-)

Plus side they won't be allowing their dog to bother any bitches. :-P

Some of the things I've heard have been amazing really.  Whats worse in when I correct people and they tell me I sound more knowledgable then the vet...Thats scary really.

Maybe the vet just said it to put her off from using said dog.  Maybe it's not up to standard and they didn't have the heart to say that:confused:

yeh I've had that before, does make you wonder.

one of the daftest things I heard was one woman trying to convince me that a labrador was in no way a gundog and that they were not bred to retrieve....had to tell her the entire breed history and the response i got was 'retrievers retrieve, labradors don't some people LoL

That's when you tell them the names of the 6 retriever breeds, labrador retriever being one of them!

believe me, i did, plus the fact that i own goldies and labs myself....still wouldn't have it lol had to laugh in the end

Or maybe they got confused, the vet could have said that castrating at such a young age could affect his growth - it can cause dogs to grow really long in their legs and so exacerbate joint problems!   Just a thought

now that is quite possible...I know they said that a vet said it, as opposed to a nurse but then it could have been a nurse.  then again who knows what was really said, still makes you think i guess (or at least it got myself and a few others thinking!)
