Five days ago, my beautiful cat Smartie escaped and had been missing for five days, he crawled home yesterday, bedraggled soaking wet and so thin but worse of all horrible injuries, probably to his pelvis and leg. Most likely he's been hit by a car. He is in the vets care and is having X-rays in the morning. I don't know what the outcome or prognosis for him will be - this hasn't ever happened to me before, but I feel so sad and guilty for not finding him before and guilty for keeping him in so he never learnt road sense???  and just can't seem to stop crying. :( :( :( :(
Will he survive? Who knows but I'm so sorry this has happened to my little man.

Sorry, just feels better to tell people how I'm feeling. One person today has said "ah well the free paper comes out friday, just get another one" another said "its just a cat"

Don't feel guilty for keeping him in - my cats weren't kept in (except at night) but they never learned road sense. Animals don't.

Years ago my old cat came in soaking wet with a badly broken back leg. The vet thought it might have to be amputated, but tried pinning and plastering it. It healed very well, although at a bit of a strange angle, and she lived another 15 years. Fingers crossed for a good outcome for Smartie. :)

Oh how awful - I had a cat that was knocked down when she was a kitten - the bone on her back leg came through the skin.  She had to have a big pin and bolts put through - looked like a huge nappy pin on the outside - had 3 operations because the pin  kept coming out.  she recovered and lived another 12 years - so fingers crossed for  Smartie that all goes well,

Ahh sorry to hear this.  I'm not a cat fan but recently my neighbours cat was injured, skin right off it's back leg, the vet thinks it must of got caught in a barbed wire fence and I took him to the vets.  Neighbour said that it doesn't seem to be healing and it happened 3 weeks ago.

Really sorry to hear that your cat has had an accident :( Lots of positive thoughts coming your way.

Really sorry to hear this.  Please don't blame yourself, cats are notoriously bad on roads.  One of mine was killed here when we first moved, and we live on a very quiet lane.  She'd always lived in a town and had been fine, we brought her over here......then that happened.  There was nothing I could have done, and no way I could have kept her in.
Another cat, I saw hit by a car - the person that hit her didn't stop, so we picked her up and took her to the vet - vet gave us 3 options, have her pts, amputate the leg (would have been difficult because the break was so high up) or pin it - we had it pinned and she's now living happily with my parents :-)  I have two house cats now.

I have everything crossed that your Smartie will be ok :-)

Whoever said 'It's just a cat' is mad!  They're never 'Just animals'

I hope Smartie is doing better and is home with you soon. Crossing everything that he made it through the night.

Oh how lucky you are that he was able to make it home.  I hope all goes well at the Vet's.  I have to agree, no matter how used they are to cars I think very few, cats or dogs, truly develop "road sense."

Smartie update:

Smartie is doing o.k. No breaks thank goodness just very bruised and battered. The most shocking thing is, he's back on his feet and walking - just very slowly and stiffly but I can't believe the turn around - I really thought he was a goner. Eight lives left I spose!

Also thankyou all for all your comments, they really helped me :)

Linsxxxxx (and a "mee-ouch" Smartie :) )

P.S Thanks for making me smile Liv xxxxx

Fantastic news - cats are amazing sometimes aren't they - we would've been in bed for a fortnight (at least) :D
