Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Fussy pregnant bitch...........feeding advice please (locked)

Hi

My bitch is being very picky with her food.

She is only eating raw mince meat (beef, chickem, chicken and tripe and just tripw on its own).

She will not eat it with any biscuits mixed it in!

Is this ok???

She seems fine in herself and is eating a normal amount of food (not over eating) just wont have the usual mixer with the meat!

I thought I would share a few foods I fed my bitch when she was pregnant, maybe yours would enjoy it too! Some bitches do get fussy and maybe a change of food will help her get her appetite back x

Boiled eggs, cottage cheese, steak, boiled chicken, tripe, fish, and when she was about 7 weeks I starting giving her litterlac.

Good luck with your girl, hope all goes well xx

Thanks for that! She loves cheese HATES eggs!

Just wondered if with no buscuits she was getting the goodness a preggy bitches need!

As she is just over 4 weeks now...........doesnt she need to start going onto puppy food!? But if she isnt having her complete then she cannot have this...

My bitch would only eat raw mince or chicken wings throughout her pregnancy. She had 9 pups and didn't lose too much overall weight. So long as she is eating something I wouldn't worry too much. What I did do with her dry food was to put some in my pocket and offer her some when on her walks. She would take it then, but not if it was in her bowl

Oh that is a relief to know! 9 pups! Thats great!

I have tried that, she always nicks my little boys wotsits, so I kept his emply packet and put some in there - she didnt fall for it though   She knows what she wants.............

Both my bitches were the same and produced large healthy litters. They would take a little of the complete food mixed with plenty of the other meats they had if given in one of our bowls rather than their own dish, though!

How funny:confused:

I put it down to them wanting to feel "special"

I don't start pregnant bitches on puppy food as early as 4 weeks - only for the last two weeks, and I change both wet and dry food to puppy at that stage.

Istart mine off on puppy fod at 4 weeks when they are confirmed in whlp.  I eep the amount at maintenance levels though until 6 weeks in hwlep, increasing to 50% more than that by whelping.

I would say instead of raw mince why not go a step further and feed her whole raw meaty bones,  and some liver once a week.  You'll have then converted to raw feeding which has been nature's food for carnivores for millions of years.  Biscuits have been around for the last 150 or so and are basically grain which wild carnivores don't eat.  I swapped over while my bitch was lactating and haven't looked back. Suggest you check this out:-  http://www.ukrmb.co.uk/

It won't do her any harm.  My mum's Pomeranian hardly ate anything for 5 weeks and she had 4 healthy pups, 2 is the norm for the breed!!  As long as she's eating something and taking in liquids I wouldn't worry.  Have to admit I never give my dogs biscuits.

Just been and brought them but I brought them in brine and with the sauce - didnt eat the ones in sauce but the plain pilchards were in her bowl for seconds! Take that as she liked them! Thanks!

Drain as much of the brine off as you can and don't give too much as it contains a lot of salt.
- By beloube Date 28.06.07 16:43 UTC
i did! thought that! squashed the brine out of them
