hi,my friend has a small breed litter aged 3 days and one of the males was born with a soft spongy fluid filled lump on top
of his head, its more to the back of his skull , hes feeding well and has gained weight too but it looks strange,
its hard to describe properly but looks like a blister? any breeders ever had or heard of this problem?
she has contacted her vet who said to leave him while hes feeding and it could be just a birthmark that will shrivel away, tonight shes called me and said a little clear fluid has come from it,no blood just clear fluid, any help appreciated.
also the spot doesnt have hair on it and she can feel his skull bones under the spot.

Hi,
Pups of breeds with short sculls can be born with hydrochephalus (sp). I know very little about it, only what I've read. It's quite serious, though. A vet, check would be my first measure, if only to be reassured it's not anything serious.
Godd luck,Karen
hi, yes i agree with you totally but the vet said leave him where he is at the moment as theres nothing they can do yet anyway,
thankyou for your reply,i too have read up on hydrochephalus but it doesnt look or sound like this, its just like a blister.

Were they full term?
he yes they were and weighed 5/6 oz
he is also strong like the others and wriggles and suckles from mum good.
i have a pic of the spot if anyonewants to see it?
just in case anyone has seen it before, thanks

Did Mum deliver them herself. I am wondering if it is just a blister where Mum may have caught him????

I have had something similar in a Cavalier. It was like half a cherry on her head ,taking up about 2/3 the surface. My Vet suggested putting the puppy to sleep he thought it was the fontanelle which was just too big to ever close. I agreed as I do not feel happy about pups even if they have a small soft spot which can close. I have often wondered if this was correct but have never heard of a similar case before.I am interested to hear what you find out.
hi,my friend can now move it side to side and she can feel the bones are fused on his skull,
the lump is soft and raised, thanks for your reply,i shall let you know how he goes with it.

Would it be worth an xray to see whats what,is it growing going down or staying the same?
hi carolyn, since its leaked a little fluid its a little smaller so we are hoping it shrivels up and goes for good, hes not in any pain and as i said she can move it and feel his skull bones are fused together so we dont think its open fontanell

the vet said leave it until after next week and see how he goes, hes thriving at the minute the same as the others which has to be a good thing.
A while ago now a friend of mine had a puppy with the same problem, only this was like a fluid filled blister on the back of the pups neck, obviously as they were concerned for the puppy they took it to a vet, vet wasn't quite sure what it was only saying they could drain the fluid off when the puppy was old enough, no need as the pup grew it totally disapeared. Baffled the vet but they thought it may have been an injury that the pup sustained from 'mum' whilst being born.
ohh thankyou,it sounds very similar to this puppy and it is on back of his skull and not on the fontanell,
my friend said hes doing great, thanks a lot,i will let you know
