Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / High Fibre Dog Food

Hi

Another question in the long quest to get my Cav to full health - just trying to do a comparison of foods.

At the moment I am using Hills R/D Prescription diet which is high in fibre (21%) I have been trying to search around to see if there are any other high fibre dry foods but the ones I have found so far only have around 4%..

Do any of you know of any other brands that are high fibre?

thanks

Burns High Oats has 6.5% fibre, MIL uses it on her oldie that has gland  and constipation problems and it seems to work well.

I don't know of any foods as such but could you not add bran to the diet or extra veggies?

This would be what I would consider.

As you are currently feeding a prescibtion diet you'll find it hard to come to any which are close, however choosing a high quality food which suits the dog and adding in a source of fibre might be a cheeper answer for maintenance rather then keeping them on prescibtion for the rest of their life.

It would of course depend on the reason you have a high fibre diet :)

I've noticed that  a number of people who use Burns say their dogs stay on the thin side, so that might be worth a thought. I think Chappie's quite high fibre as well, though I'm not particularly au fait with the ingredients.

Thanks everyone I'll have a think about the burns - maybe when he has lost some more weight. As a maintenance type food.

I would say you want him on a high quality food with good levels of protein and fats, but less of it.  Make up for the lack of bulk by substituting half hsi food with vegetables, which wil fill him up, but won;t be digested.

With my own breed that tends to put on weight easily thsi seems to be the only way to go if you want to maintain conditon.

What I and many people have found with the high fibre diet foods, is that the dogs loose conditon, muscle tone and coat especially.
