Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Metritis after whelping?

My girl delivered three beautiful puppies on Saturday morning but all three placentas were retained. We went along to the Vet who gave her an oxytocin jab to clear things out and he took an xray to make sure there were no more pups. However, after some green/black discharge over the weekend, she developed a bright red smelly discharge on Monday. I have taken her back to the Vet who says she has an infection called metritis which has probably been aggravated by the retained placentas. I was worried about pyometra but the discharge has no pus just really smelly red clotted blood. Has anyone one else come across this please? My girl now has to have daily injections of antibiotics for the next few days. Will she be ok? How long could the infection take to clear up? Thanks.

Hi,

My girl developed metritis after her first litter. She was back and forth to the vet and on antibiotics for over two weeks. She even went off her food at the time and had me sick with worry. The timing of the discharge was different to your girl's though, her first symptoms were restlessness and a reluctance to eat along with a high temp. She did go on to have pus in her discharge but the antibiotics cleared it all up.

I know it is a worrying time but lara,my girl, made a full recovery and I am certain that your girl will do the same.

Take care.

Well things took a turn for the worse this afternoon when they scanned my girl and found 'foreign tissue' and unusual thickening of the uterus wall. The bleeding had continued really badly all day and although I had already asked for a scan, they thought the antibiotics would do the trick. Wrong! Result - surgery for a spay and the uterus was found to be very thick, with pussy tissue and a decomposed mummified foetus. My girl is through the worst and I'm praying in the next 48 hours she feels a whole lot better.

I hope she is better soon, and that one of the pups will be all you hope for as you won't have another chance to breed from her.

Sorry to hear that your girl has been so poorly. Hope she is 100% very soon.

Many thanks for all your good wishes. I have to say my girl would seem to be 100% recovered, what a transformation. We still have more check ups next week. I was preparing to have to bottle feed the puppies but so far so good with Mum's milk after being spayed. I am fortunate to have two beautiful baby girls in the litter to run on and make my choice. The end of a very traumatic week.

Ah huge sighs of relief then! Hope your little girls turn out well.

I had a bitch spayed at the same time as her C section as I was planning to spay after the litter anyway, adn there was no problem with milk.

Hope the pups are super for all your trouble.
