Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 5 week old pup, won't eat!
- By Chezza77 [gb] Date 11.06.07 18:13 UTC
Hi All,

Any ideas what we can do? Puppy has started not to eat, losing weight. The pup's poo is fine and she isn't being sick. Vet advised to fed her 15-20ml Lactol every 3hrs, which we are falsing her to drink by squezzing it onto her tongue and her swallowing. Any other ideas on what might tempt her to eat, she seems fragile, but she is wagging her tail and walking slowly about. But just really worried she won't eat or play with her litter mates. Any advice would be appriciated, has anyone else come across this problem?

Thanks

Chezza

That unfortunately doesn't sound great!  Try some Enervite it won't do any harm.  Is the mother still allowing the pups to feed off her?  You may be best just trying to get this pup on it's own with her and seeing if it will feed from her.

Hope things improve.

Hi perrodeagua,

Where would I get Enervite from? and what does it do?

Thanks

The big animal store, is it PetsAtHome, they used to sell it.  I've only been about 4 times but they do sell it.  It's a food supplement but in many dogs that I've seen use it it does help improve their appetite.

Hiya

I have managed to find some Nutri-sat in my whelping kit, is that stuff any good?

When did you worm the pups? One of mine was sick and wouldn't eat for a day or so after I wormed them for the first time. He's fine now, in fact he is a little monster

Hi

I last wormed the pups at 3 weeks old and they are due to be wormed again tommorrow. When they were wormed last time, they were fine.

This may sound daft but try the pup on some natural yoghurt.  Its worked for us on puppies that have been fading.  Its worth a try

It's possible (though not probable ;) ) that the worming might sort puppy out. But as fifi has stated try some natural yoghurt. It helps to put back the 'good bacteria' and sorts a lot of upset tummies out. If it goes on for too long I'd go to the vet and demand a proper check up. It could be a touch of something a bit more serious. In fact I think I would ask the vet if it's ok to worm a puppy that isn't really well. It could be any type of gastro enteritis problem, or nothing :D

A puppy that has not eaten in 24 hours is ill and I would have her at the vets, certainly wouldn't worm her.

From her post it does seem that she has had the pup to the vets.  I also wouldn't worm it at this moment in time.  How's it doing?

Hi

She is suckling from a bottle, about 30ml of Lactol each feed, won't eat any solids though. I have given her some Nutri-sat too, to help her along. I think she will pulll through, just need now to get some weight back on her. Any ideas on what will help get weight on the pup, once she starts eating more food?
I hope she gets better soon, its a pup my friend has picked and she, like me is also a little worried. But I don't see she is getting any worse, so from here hopefully things can only get better.

Chezza :-)

If she's happy with liquids but not more solid food, ask your Vet to test her kidneys.

Hi

Why her kidneys? She was eating quite alot last week, but all of a sudden stopped eating.

Chezza

Because what you are describing can be a symptom of a pup who's kidney are failing to grow.  A simple test by your Vet can remove this as a possibility.

Have you mated your bitch with rib and skin problems?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 12.06.07 23:26 UTC
Supposedly she sent that one back to the breeder so I don't think so:confused:

Is she suckling from Mu too.  To be honest that woudl be best, but I would think there was a serious health issue in a pup that young not eating.

My friend had a litter that had kidney problems as the bitch didn't have enough milk and she didn't realise this. She lost several puppies and the ones that survived were quite weak and died at an early age. You think that all is well as puppies are suckling but not getting milk. Might be as well to get this checked out.
