Topic Dog Boards / Health / stiffness in hip
- By jack29 [gb] Date 10.06.07 12:34 UTC
Is it best to rest or to exercise lightly, for example short walks.  My little girl has been seen by the vet and because its only slight(she is limping alittle) he does'nt want to give her anything just yet as it is more than likely due to her age, it's her 11th birthday today.

Many Thanks
Jane

Your vet should/would be best to advise you on this as it depends what the cause of the stiffness is. If it's an injury then usually rest is best, but if it's arthritis or something similar then gentle exercise often is best :)

It is arthritis in her right hip.  The vet did talk to me about it when he was examining her but i was to busy holding the end, she maybe an oldie but she still does'nt like her vet:rolleyes:

With my oldies I've found they are less stiff if you can keep thier muscle tone up with gentle walks, free running if they like and the occasional swim :) I'd also put her on glucosamine and chondroitin which can have amazing results - I buy mine here, the A30f are capsules that are easily opened to sprinkle on food.

Try the swimming for her that often helps, if you have a pool near you..

I'd recommend swimming too!  Either hydrotherapy pool, or in this gorgeous weather what abour a local lake or even the sea if you live near enough!

The swimming sounds wonderful to me but Jazz does'nt like water at all and will do everything possible to stay away from it, she does'nt even like to go on the grass when its wet:rolleyes::rolleyes: She's a funny little things but i would'nt have her any other way:cool:

Thanks for all the advice, i've just put in an order from the tablets.
Many Thanks

Hi Jane
Sorry to read that your girl is a bit uncomfortable.  Just wondering if you'd considered trying a bioflow collar?  They do seem to work well for some - and people too.  A friend had a Ridgeback that was really lame on her front legs - I probably would have been at the point of putting her to sleep as it was awful to watch her - and she tried a bioflow collar.  It was amazing, within a short while she was moving well again.  I've used a bracelet myself and found it helped with a painful wrist, but a friend tried one and it made her feel really unwell.  Maybe worth a thought?
Best wishes
Carina
