Topic Dog Boards / Health / Getting Rather Concerned Now
- By bevb [in] Date 05.06.07 05:16 UTC
6 days ago my dog started being sick, not her food coming up just bright yellow slimey liquid.
I starved her for 24 hours but it was getting worse. Took her to vets, Fri who gave her anti sickness jab and some paste for me to administer and said starve her another 24 hours.
But by Saturday she was still bringing up the same stuff and looking in discomfort.
So back to the vets we went. They x-rayed her to check there was no blockage, I didn't think there was as she was doing less through no food, but normal poo. X-ray showed nothing, so they gave her another jab and sent me home with some medicene to syringe into her and some tablets, also some Id food to have little and often.
She was not sick on Sunday but done some very loose Bright Orange Poo that really stunk and a bit more this morning. Now this evening she has been very sick, vomiting up her food.
Any Ideas what could be causing her to be so ill. I watch her like a hawk and am 99% certain she has not eaten anything to cause it.
Its starting to concern me now as I thought when the sickness stopped she was starting to improve, now its back again even on her medication.
Is the bright orange poo significant of anything?
- By JackieS [gb] Date 05.06.07 07:06 UTC
I don't want to scare you but orange poo can be a sympton of AIHA (auto-immune hemolytic anemia) . Unfortunetly we lost a dog to this disease 2weeks ago, but his came on very quickly and severly,he had orange poo the day before he showed any other symptoms but because he liked to help himself from the fruit bowl I thought he had just been eating an orange
It might be worth asking your vet about the orange poo just in case

Orange poo could also be the result of anti biotics, if she's been given any? I know mine - well my dogs - went like this after she'd had an operation (GDV) and the vet told me that was why. Not that I'm dismissing what JackieS said, just saying it could be another reason. Best to call your vet and ask him. Did they suggest any blood tests to detemine any such illnesses?
Hope things turn out ok.

UPDATE

Shady is now in the vets on a drip and the vet is running bloods today.
Missing my girl already but little Milo looks pleased at having my sole attention and the promise of an extra long walk.
Just hope Shady is ok can't help being a worrying mummy.
- By arched [gb] Date 05.06.07 08:50 UTC
Of course you are worried, but at least the vet can now sort out whats wrong and get her fit again.
I was going to say, if she was bringing up yellow bile then that would be probably because she was being sick on an empty stomach which is quite common. Luckily, as you say, that bit seems to have cleared.
I think it sounds like she has a nasty tummy bug so a rest at the vets will do her lots of good.

Hope you have some good news later and that Shady is home soon.

ANOTHER UPDATE

Spoke to vet this afternoon and Shady has to stay in tonight and probably tomorrow night too. I cried when I heard how long. I feel like my right arm has been cut off she is my baby.
I just hope she isn't scared and thinks her mummy has abandoned her as she is a real mummys girl.

Not sure if this will be any use, but one of my girls showed similar simptoms to what you have discribed including inconclusive x-rays and it wasn`t until the vet opened her up as a last resort that they found a cork blocking the outlet of her stomach. The cork didn`t show up on x-ray.Most expensive bottle of wine we have ever drunk!!!!!!!Good Luck on a positive outcome.Gail :) :) :)

I'm so sorry to hear your girl  has had to stay at the vets. I hope you have good news this morning
- By bevb [in] Date 06.06.07 18:05 UTC
Just to let you all know she is still in the vets on the drip.  Her potassium levels are low so she has some of that going in to her as well through the drip.  Not quite sure what that means though with them low.
They are going to try and offer her a little food this evening and I have to ring again in the morning to see how she is.
Thanks for all your good wishes

I am pleased to tell you Shady came home at lunch time
She has been on a drip the past 3 days and has not been sick or had the awful orange runs for the past 2 days so she was allowed home. Guess the first thing she done when we got home, she rushed into the garden and after a very long wee she done me a lovely runny bright orange poo that stunk
I am hoping this is just the excitement of coming home.
Its fantastic to have my girly back though i've missed her like mad.
Not sure Milo is as pleased, he has actually gone quiet, I think he rather enjoyed being the center of attention without Shady grabbing the toys when he wants to play .
Lets hope we are on the up now and will soon be back out chasing her frisbee
- By Sullysmum Date 07.06.07 14:08 UTC
Ive always heard the bright yellow bile is from when their tummies are empty?
- By Lori Date 07.06.07 15:31 UTC
I'm glad to hear the Shady is home and hope that's the last runny orange stuff you ever see!
