I am stopping smoking!!!:eek::-D

Me and OH both are, he is on tablets, I am doing it through will power. Haven't had one since Saturday and for some reason today and yesterday I really really want one. Please give me support not to have one because I really want to succeed and it is making me feel so good doing it through will power alone!!:-D
- By HuskyGal Date 23.05.07 15:40 UTC
(((((((you can do it!!!!! ))))))))))

Right there with you Paula (*knashing teeth, rocking backwards and forwards*) Im on my second attempt
seriously considering using Zyban now (very reluctant to use a drug.. ironically) but I just cant kick the vile habit :(
Dont smoke in house or indoors anywhere.. but do have crafty ones in smokers corner at work and in the garden :(
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 23.05.07 15:48 UTC
Haw hard is it??!! I can't believe it!!!! OH is on something similar to Zyban but they make him feel so sick. And it does make me feel smug that I can do it without help!!:-D

But it is haaaarrrrrrd!! You don't need Zyban you can do it!! If you tell me where you're crafty smokers corner is I'll come and meet you!! Shhhhh!!!:-D
- By HuskyGal Date 23.05.07 16:14 UTC

>If you tell me where you're crafty smokers corner is I'll come and meet you!<

we lose it soon :(
Its crazy at the Nicks we have a cage where the prisoners in custody can be escorted to have a cig, so we all go there... but come the Ban, the prisoners can still go out... but we are not allowed (as its our work place) to smoke there!!

I must give up! (..or get arrested!?? :D)
- By Annie Goz [gb] Date 23.05.07 16:02 UTC
Hi
well done to both of you, have you thought about joining a smoking forum....  would put the 2 on that I some times use but I'am not sure if I'am allowed...it can help especially if you want to have a good moan...everyone on there as either been there or going through the same thing as you ....you can also google a Quit Meter like this one...this one is mine and it keeps track of my statistics

I have been quit for 3 Months, 3 Weeks, 5 Days, 16 hours, 12 minutes and 23 seconds (115 days). I have saved £130.13 by not smoking 2,313 cigarettes. I have saved 1 Week, 1 Day and 45 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 28/01/2007 00:30
Good luck
- By HuskyGal Date 23.05.07 16:09 UTC
oh thats a good idea Annie! :)
- By Dill [gb] Date 23.05.07 15:46 UTC
PUT THE CIGGY DOWN AND MOVE AWAY FROM THE MATCHES !!

DON'T DO IT - YOU'VE COME SO FAR, YOU CAN DO IT - even if it's just to beat HIM on his tabs :D :D :D

Seriously tho,   TOTAL RESPECT   for both of you, it's so easy to say "oh well I'll give up tomorrow/next year"
keep thinking of all your reasons for giving up and try to arrange regular treats to keep you on track :D :D :D

Cmon girl, You can do it - You know you can !!  :D :D :D
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 23.05.07 15:50 UTC
Oh yeah and I'm eating waaaay too much ice cream and maltesers too!! But at least if I stop I might be able to run round courses of show jumps with my daughter slightly easier than I did the other week when they thought they were going to have to get an oxygen mask for me!!!:-D
- By Harley Date 23.05.07 16:05 UTC
Hats off to you for being a non-smoker :) :)
- By Lori Date 23.05.07 16:10 UTC
Right I'm sending every ounce of willpower I have to you and HG! You guys can kick this thing right up the backside. There are so many positives you will get from quitting if you can just hang in the first month. Please, please, please don't give up and feel depressed even if you lose it and light a ciggy up. Those falls off the wagon will become fewer and farther between. My OH never quit smoking - he just hasn't had one in 3 years. :)

Just think:
By not smoking 2 packs a day you can spend ~£70 a week on chocolate, clothes, shoes, or a weekly massage by a well oiled massuese :-D
Pearly whites and fresh breath
Clothes that smell of - nothing! yeah
Your dogs will enjoy french kissing you
You will not be giving your life away in order to line the pickets of some rich tobacco company that intentionally adds chemical to cigarettes to make you more addicted. That would make me angry enough to chuck the things.
You'll be able to run up flights of stairs and hillsides without wheezing or coughing
No wrinkly faces for you - no you'll be smooth as a babies cheek

Go go CD quitters!
- By Dogz Date 23.05.07 16:43 UTC Edited 23.05.07 16:47 UTC
GO on you CAN,
My advise 91/2 years on...........
Eat sweeties, drink sips of water, chew gum don't worry about it.
A fiddle with toy called a tamougotchi saved me...A worry beads type of effect.
And I still say just like LOri's O H I am going to start again when I am about 70, just having a break from smoking.
Nowadays I think of the cash whenever I treat myself to something!
Karen
- By justlou Date 23.05.07 17:24 UTC
I quit 7 1/2 months ago :) After smoking for 17 years, 20+ a day  I am so glad i quit, and i now feel great :) If you really struggle try using the NiQuitin Lozengers, i still use them now if i'm having a bad day.

I have tried Zyban in the past Liv, they made me feel very suicidal  Just be careful if you do chose to use them.

Good Luck X
- By ashlee [gb] Date 23.05.07 18:28 UTC
sending you all the willpower I have in my mind, but never seem to be able to use for myself.I am trying to smoke less as I have my parents staying with me this week:rolleyes: and although they never say anything,I went back on a promise to give up in January so I am feeling pretty rubbish about it all,BUT you! you have nearly done a week? so when sat comes reward yourself, and focus on your reward and not the smokes.
Ash x

I knew I was coming to the right place for support so thank you everyone!!:-D

HG you can do it too...I'll be with you every step of the way and we can sneak off for the odd crafty one no one on here will find out!!!!:-D

I was convinced when I wanted to stop I would be able to but I am definately finding it harder than I thought I would. With it being banned at work from July it is for the best though.

The main motive to stop is that all the money I am saving will go towards my next puppy that I have on order!!!!:-D :-D

Have heard Zyban is bad, it is a similar thing that OH is on and it has made him sick as a pig. Am so proud of him though because he smoked even more than me. Least I'm stopping myself without feeling sick though...always knew men were weaker!!!!;-) :-D :-D

Please keep the support coming....and if I say I've had one tell me off!!!
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 24.05.07 15:46 UTC
That's another 24 hours without one!!!:-D

How you getting on HG??!!! :-)

Don't dispair Liv. I'm going to blatantly plagerize from this site:

"If you have tried to quit smoking and failed before, take comfort in the fact that most smokers fail several times before quitting successfully. Your past failures are not a lesson that you are unable to quit. Instead, view them as part of the normal journey toward becoming a nonsmoker."

I'm packing the sled with ruby port, cakes and a case of truffles - we're heading south to get you. I think a week at Club Geordie will sort you out. We've got a padded room, some slinky white jackets and plenty of sinful indulgences that don't involve plant products. :) Milo says bring the red head too (Caoimhe's not old enough to put her lip out at that). OK, Storm too but no bone stealing - he's had enough of that. :-D
- By huskypup [gb] Date 24.05.07 20:49 UTC
Keep up the good work!  It will be worth it, really it will.  One day at a time.  I have up 4 years, 7 months ago and it was tough.  I could not sit still for about the first month, I had to keep busy, mostly cooking which unfortunately meant that I put on a few pounds, but I just had to focus on the smoking thing, then I tackled the weight thing.  Much better now, but I have to admit I still fancy a ciggie every now and then.  But at least I'm not dependant any more.  Keep going it does get easier with each day and you will find that you will think about cigs less and less.  My OH says the best thing is that we do not have to decorate the house so often! :D
- By baxter Date 25.05.07 00:15 UTC
Good luck! I managed to quit after reading a book recomended to me, Allan Carr's the easy way to stop smoking and it was so simple. and you'll do better than your OH as he is substituting his addiction, with another! I really found the book so helpfull!! and will power will be all you need!
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 25.05.07 07:16 UTC
Tonight is going to be the BIIIIIG test. I'm off to the pub for a couple. That is when I will want one more than ever.

But if I can beat tonight I reckon I'm nearly there!!!!:-D
- By CherylS Date 25.05.07 07:57 UTC
I smoked for 10 years when I was younger.  My OH gave up and he found it quite easy but I was proper addicted.  There was a day when OH threw money at me and told me to buy some cigs because I was sooooo moody but this just strengthened my resolve.  I got through mountains of extra strong mints at the time, if you need a crutch then use it!!!  At the end of every day knowing you haven't given in and you are still in control makes you feel proud.

I found the first 2 weeks the hardest and had to avoid everyone that smoked which was not easy as at the time you could smoke anywhere except in shops.  After that I knew I'd cracked it and after 6 weeks I knew I would never ever smoke again and I have not even had so much as a puff.

My willpower isn't great but I really wanted to give up and if I can do I know you can do it too :)

Giving up smoking is on my top ten list of best things I have ever achieved.

Does anyone remember going to see their GP at a time when it seemed every GP smoked in their surgeries?  Pipes in ashtrays on the desk, that sort of thing?
- By Harley Date 25.05.07 09:49 UTC
Does anyone remember going to see their GP at a time when it seemed every GP smoked in their surgeries?  Pipes in ashtrays on the desk, that sort of thing?

Yes I remember that :) My grandmother was also advised to take up smoking by her GP for it's "calming effect if one is of a nervy disposition" - but as she was bolshy as well as highly strung she didn't follow his advice :D
- By Isabel Date 25.05.07 09:58 UTC
My Gran was advised the same. I suppose it was the Prozac of the day :)

How did you get on Paula??
I have managed to go out and not have one  wooo-hoooo.. didnt even think about it!!
BUT
now Im back home Im desperate to nip out to the garden and have one
- By craigles [gb] Date 26.05.07 09:10 UTC
Well done! I stopped on the 13th May 2006, so I've had my year anniversary!  I'm not going to say I've never had a cigarette since as I would be lying as at a couple of points in that year I was so stressed I could have killed for a cigarette so it seemed logical to have one!  But not had one now for months and to be honest it is very rare I want one. It does get easier and you're both doing brilliantly...day at a time is the way to go.  Think I'm not smoking today !  Good luck as I can remember the first few months so well and it's a wonder I didn't get prosecuted for stalking as I would follow people around town to sniff their smoke!
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 26.05.07 11:31 UTC
Well Done HG!!! That is a brilliant achievement!!!! :-D :-D

As for me......I chickened out and didn't go. I could have killed for one yesterday so I thought going out would make it even worse.Soon I'll be able to enjoy going out without a fag but for now a drink and a fag go hand in hand so this stopping smoking really is healthy because for now i'm also tee total!!!!:-D :-D

Forgot to say....well done to you too Craigles for passing your one year anniversary!! Really hope I get to that point. :-D
- By Annie Goz [gb] Date 26.05.07 19:46 UTC
When I first gave up it took me nearly 2 months to be around a smoker, then when I knew it wouldn't bother me I went to my sisters house (she smokes ) and I can truthfully say I wouldn't give you a thank you for a fag any more (they really stink ) no not going to be a born again anti smoker couldn't stand those sort of people when I did smoke ....but until you give it up I don't think you realise how stinky they are
But keep up the good work every minute of every day that you don't smoke is a bonus
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 26.05.07 20:34 UTC
WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I have now officially gone a week without a fag!!!!!!! :-D :-D :-D
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 26.05.07 20:37 UTC
Forgot to say....the reason I know that is because my last one was at 8.30pm last Saturday night......not that I'm counting the minutes or anything!!! ;-) :-D
- By craigles [gb] Date 26.05.07 20:41 UTC
Well done Paula...........Keep it up........You can do it

Lol, I had hypno 6 years ago after trying everything, really took the edge off. I was in the Army nicknamed Woodbine! Hardest thing I ever did. Hubs still smokes, but I was like Patsy (Ab Fab) even woke up in the night for one! If you've gone a week you've cracked it but more likely to get there with a little help (who needs know) ;-)
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 28.05.07 11:20 UTC
Guess what I've done????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:confused::eek::-D

Only went to the pub yesterday and didn't have one.......I thought about it but determination to beat OH is a good thing!!! He didn't have one either but he's got help lol!!!!:-D

Am so proud of myself!!:-D
- By huskypup [gb] Date 28.05.07 12:17 UTC
Wooohoooo! Fantastic, that is one of the biggest hurdles to get over.  I didn't dare go near a pub for at least a couple of months when I first gave up.  Well done. :D
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 28.05.07 21:36 UTC
The smoking ban will be here soon so you won't have to worry about going out. :D

Best thing that ever happened up here in Scotland IMHO, I can now go for a night out and not stink of stale smoke (other peoples - never smoked). No need to send clothes to dry cleaners after wearing once and no washing my hair four times to get rid of the smell, no nippy eyes and sore throat either. Took it really badly when we were on holiday in Yorkshire last year and landed back in smoky pubs.

Now - if only they could ban food ...... :D

Keep it up ladies you can do it!
- By ClaireyS Date 28.05.07 21:42 UTC
we went in a new bar in town last night, there was something "different" about it but I couldnt think what, until I saw the sign saying that it was a no-smoking venue - so refreshing no scuzzy ash trays, fag butts on the floor and no thick fog of smoke.  It was a shame we had been somewhere else first as I still smelt of smoke this morning :(

Claire (who hasnt smoked at all since 22nd April 2003 ;) )
- By lynnt Date 28.05.07 22:58 UTC
Well done to you and Stu  Keep it up. My dad has been off the ciggies now for over 10 weeks .
He has said it is hard , as he had a little drink the other night and said there was something missing :(
Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu cannnnnnnnn doooooooooo thisssssssssssssss
PS what this about another puppy LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lynn
- By Paula20380 [gb] Date 29.05.07 08:15 UTC
Thank you everybody!! It was a major achievement for me going in a pub and not having one. Still find my hardest time is on a night when I have put my daughter to bed as that is when I would have smoked the most. It is so hard watching the telly without a fag lol!!! :-D

Stu is doing well too!! He came home from work yesterday moaning like mad because somebody had been smoking and his clothes and hair stank!!! Never thought I would hear him moan about that!!!!

I can't believe I haven't had one for over a week!! Never thought I would last this long. How are you doing HG??!!!!!  :-D :-D

Paula.x

P.S.Think you will be shocked by the puppy Lynn and that is all I'm saying!!!!:-D How is that handsome Samson??!!! Are you coming down to Blackpool?? Did you go to Scotland last week?
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 30.05.07 13:26 UTC
Here is a scary note for all of you who smoke.  My 88 year old Mum was just hospitalized due to a brain aneurysm.  Mum stopped smoking nearly 50 years ago but we are told it is still considered to be a factor contributing to her aneurysm.  50 years ago!

Mum is in recovery and doing fine so far.
- By ceejay Date 30.05.07 13:52 UTC
Don't say that   The ex-smokers will all want a cigarette now.   My husband finally gave up about 8 years ago after being a very heavy smoker.  Up till the last couple of years he could tell you exactly how many years and days it was since giving up.  It is just as well he did - he went on to have a heart bypass 6 years ago - he didn't know when he gave up although I was really concerned about his shortness of breath. He is still fighting a weight problem which got worse after he gave up the cigarettes.   However his health problems were not just cigarettes - he had a lot of stress in work for some years and has always been overweight - he isn't fond of exercise either.  He has always seen it as a chore to take the dog out.    He tells himself that he will take up smoking again if he makes it into his 80s!!!!
Sorry to hear about your Mum JJ - I do hope they can treat it successfully.
- By Lori Date 30.05.07 14:52 UTC
Boo, downer! ;-) :-D No one would give up if they thought it was no use. So here's a positive story. My dad smoked for over 40 years and his quitting process took about 15 years. The clincher was when he spent two weeks in intensive care post-surgery to route out his smoke clogged veins. He figured the first two weeks was the hardest and since that was over, time to quit again. That was 30 years ago. He's in his 80's and fit as a fiddle (OK, he's shaped more like a cello but that's another story :-D).
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 30.05.07 17:04 UTC
Cello (pear shape) is better than apple shape.  Apples have all their weight up around their major organs, much less healthy.  Pears (cello) have it down lower, below their heart, lungs etc.
- By Lori Date 30.05.07 17:20 UTC
Oh he's an apple all right. I just picked the fattest string instrument I could think of. Should have chosen a kettle drum ;-)
- By Jetstone Jewel [ca] Date 30.05.07 17:02 UTC
Sorry to all, that certainly was not meant to be a downer.  The point is that if my Mum had continued to smoke the chance of her having an aneurysm would have been increased by that much more; perhaps the one she had would have been worse or at a younger age.  Stopping when she did certainly did decrease her risk factors, just not as much as never having smoked at all would.
