Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Holly still not eating

Well it's 3 days since Holly lost her puppies and she has eaten 2 of the smallest pieces of chicken you have ever seen. Even prior to the C Section she had had very little to eat/drink for the best part of a fortnight.
I have tried chicken, fish, egg, canned dog/cat food, tinned tuna, cheese even pieces of ham, beef, honeyed water and goats milk
We were at the Vets yesterday and she said her gums were pale and if she does not improve by tomorrow she will be admitted and put on a drip.
I would much prefer her to stay at home as I think she has had enough trauma but what else can I try?

Have you tried the food supplement that you can get from Dogsat Home or whatever it's called?  My brains gone dead but it's in a tube and you give them so much a day.  Usually helps our Pom's to start eating again.  Is she drinking?  If she is how about put some glucose in the water as this will help too.  Agghhhh I can't believe that I can't remember the name of the food supplement, I'll have a think I;m sure it will come to me!!

Promax?

Promax? never heard of it but there again never needed it I suppose. I have tried her with all drinks including honey and glucose. I have tried her on her own with the gang to encourage her and with her daughter from her 1st litter all to no avail. If she takes some food she just lets it fall out of her mouth and with biscuits she crunches it up then lets it all fall out and spits the crumbs out

Hopefully you have tried one of the appetite stimulations out there today, if she still does not eat tomorrow, get her to the vets on that drip, as much as you do not want her to go through anymore it could be the difference between becoming seriously ill and getting better again, some of those foods and liquids should have tempted her your best bet seems the chicken, keep trying her with that and a little rice she sounds unwell to me so allow any type of vet interference needed even if that means her staying away from home.;-)

I have my fingers crossed that she will pick up soon.

The poor love.

My Lou Lou went through this also - she had pups rotting inside her and we only knew on about day 51 when she got the dreaded greeny brown discharge (she then had a c section to wash it all out). She was soooo depressed and wouldn't eat ANYTHING for about 5-6 days. Like you I was so worried about her. She was mothering shoes and socks and bits of chain or anything she could find. I had to take then all off her and try to act normal.

In the end as she was a nervous wreck (normally a nutter) just hiding in the corner the vet gave her some tranquilisers for 4-5 days and that in the end chilled her out and she started to calm down and eat.

In all it took her about 3 weeks to get over it.

Hope your baby is OK soon.
Aimi x

Had Holly at the Vets this morning. Spoke to the senior Vet who is not happy with her but not sure if it is hormonal, physical, mental or a bit of each. She has a temperature of 103 degrees and still not eating and has been given stronger antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and to go back Friday. The Vet had spoke to the other that had performed the C Section and had said that the Uterine wall had completely broke down and literally being held together by a fine membrane, had it perforated it would almost certainly have caused peritonitis and a high possibility that we would have lost our girl. As it happens the C Section basically saved her life. He obviously could not determine why the pups came on the 58th day maybe through the breakdown of the wall or an underlying infection.
Since we have got back the discharge has changed to slightly more bloody so will need to keep a good eye on her.
