My 3 yr old lab has not been himself lately, in fact I would go so far as to say that he is sad (please don't laugh like the vet).  He has lost loads of weight and is just not himself.  He has had numerous blood tests and teeth checked all the things the vet can think of but still he isn't right the only thing my vet can come up with is that he has been spooked.  When my bitch was in season a month ago i put him into kennels for the very 1st time (it is the kennels where we goes for training so it is the same people).  He was fine when we brought hime home but now I just don't know what to do with him.  Any suggestions.  He is due back in teh kennels in 2 weeks time with my bitch as we are going away.

It sounds like he is a bit depressed, doesn't it? Dogs that live with other dogs do tend to get a tad upset when removed from their friend(s) Just give him time. Don't fuss him too much but carry on as normal. Once he has been to the kennels with your bitch he might start to get better. Sorry I can't help any more.

Not to sound awful but it could be the other way round !
Some dogs really enjoy being in kennels and love the interaction and the nice smells !!! etc.
He could be missing the Kennels ! At least if that's the case you will be happy to go away.
Mark his reaction when you take him back, see if he perks up when he realises where he is.
I have known many dogs that do love kennel life.

Not a very nice vet you have there, no reason to laugh at all. I think anybody who cares for their pet knows when something is wrong.
I can see in my dogs eyes if he is unhappy or unwell. I also took my cat to the vet once, simply because he seemed low. I had no idea what but I knew something was wrong. Turned out he had a high temperature and the vet said he was obviously trying to fight off an infection of some kind. She commented that I knew him very well.
You keep on reading the signs your dog gives - it's quite natural.

I certainly believe he can look and feel sad.  To be contradictory, what about some extra special attention to make up for the YOU time he lost while at the Vet's?  Maybe a long walk, just you two?  My girl really responds to a walk in a new place, she gets bored with the same old trail.

Actually following on from the walk theory, is he happy on his walks????

I wouldn't worry too much if he is happy and full of life outside and just looking depressed inside.

It does happen to a lot of dogs after the kennels who knows what goes on in a dogs mind sometimes, as long as he is eating and enjoying his walks and runs, let's hope whatever his problem is will sort out.

He is lively, eating well, loves his walks and his free running other than loosing weight and looking sad he is as playful as he always is, still thinls he is a puppy and wanting to get on your knee and all that.  It could just be me worrying too much.  I have to take him back to the vets in 2 weeks to be re-weighed so I am going to do this before we go away then again when he comes back from the kennels.

Sorry Linda, missed the bit about him loosing weight, that actually is a bit of a worry especially if he is eating well as if he were pining he would be eating less.

Although dogs quite often loose weight when a bitch is in season this is due to them not eating as well, (as they only have one thing on their minds :-D) and it is quite common for dogs to do this and then put their weight back on once the bitch is out of season again. But as he has been home now for 4 weeks post season it can't be that and as you say he is eating well, it is strange.  Was his weight good after the kennels?? Or is this just since coming home, if he lost in the kennels that is understandable. Is his worming up to date?

I hope his weight will have gone back up on your return visit to the vets, if he is still loosing get your vet to take things seriously, our dogs don't look sad for no reason keep going with your instincts, they are the only thing most of our animals have to spot a problem.
