Hi
As far as I know, you can show any dog you like at a companion show, and if it's purebred, you can go in the pedigree classes.  As I'm sure you are aware, a longcoat is a fault - but I've been beaten by mismarked Ridgies at exemption shows and my aussie was given a best in show but I'm pretty sure the judge didnt' know what she was :)
Have fun

And of course there's the novelty classes - I've given a longhaired black GSD 1st in Handsomest Dog - he was just really striking and impressive!! :-)

yes you can - Companion shows are all about having fun and 'dipping your toe' into the show world - they are very dependent on the weather though- we are holding ours tomorrow and I've just had to beg the indoor equestrian facilities as the weather is forecast to be dreadful :(
