I'm thinking about getting two part time jobs, complicated as it might be...just putting the feelers out so to speak!
Looking at what's available they'll both be about £5500 pa, spoke to the Inland Revenue this morning who told me the tax allowance is £5225 and anything earned after that would be at 22% tax.
I just wondered if anyone does this, work 2 different jobs, and whether it is worth it?
Thankyou :)

You'll only get the tax allowance once tho' - so one job will all be taxed :) :) They nominate one job as your 'main' job and that receives the tax allowance, the other will tax everything at 22%
Of course it will be worth it if you want more money :) You'll only pay the same tax as tho' you had just one job earning £11000 :)

Yes, I guessed that's what she meant, but have just worked it out roughly and think it might be do-able :)
Both jobs would bring in about the same before tax so even after 22% of one of them is taken away it's not too bad.
Now NI and other deductions...see what that does. might change my mind yet!

Don't forget that for this tax year, the first £ 2230 AFTER your £5225 is only taxed at 10 % - then 22 % after that. It changes next year tho' :) :)

I work two jobs, 20 hours as an IT tutor within a local college and receive my tax allowance on this income. I also work 6 hours a week doing the accounts for a local company and pay BR tax on this income. I've worked two part-time jobs for several years now and thorougly enjoy the contrast.
I have four part time jobs. I got the inland revenue to split my tax code between the two main jobs as I only earn about 5000 between the two
Thankyou for the replies :)
A question to those who do have a few part time jobs - does/did your employer have any National Insurance issues?
I used to work p/t a few years ago and tried to get another p/t at a local kennels but as soon as I told him I had another job he wasn't interested as it would cost him too much in NI, or something to that effect!

None of my employers have ever had issue with NI issues. I get on really well with my employer who I go to tomorrow and will ask her if you like if there is an issue but she has never said anything.
Please, if you wouldn't mind Lesley :)
Will have a discussion with Adam tonight to see what he thinks but I've definatley got itchy feet syndrome where I am now ;)

I asked my employer this morning and she said even if I hadn't told her that it was my second job the inland revenue would have told her and advised on the tax code which is Basic Rate, NI contributions are no problem either, if all tax allowance isn't used in first job, you will get a refund on the money paid in second job. She said it's really no different to payroll whether you have one job or two. Hope this helps. I love having two jobs as my jobs are very different and if I were to do 9-5 in an office I know I would be bored, so do 8.30-11.30am twice a week (accounts), then do different teaching (IT) shifts in a college. Works well for me.

I have two part-time jobs and pay my own NI, but the total income from both is below the tax threshhold.
