Topic Dog Boards / Health / alternative to tagamet syrup?
- By steffini Date 02.05.07 21:21 UTC
Hi could anyone tell me if their is a product similar to tagamet syrup that can be brought from chemists as mine do not sell tagamet syrup they did suggest zantac but was unsure if this would be ok ,and the reason im asking is because my dog who is quite old for her breed had joint problems and was given metacam which made her very poorly, she is still suffering from an irritated stomach now also she was extremely traumatised at the vets on a previous visit so when i last took her she was displaying extreme signs of distress ,does anyone know if gaviscon can be used to ease acid in a dogs stomach?thanks in advance for any replys:)

Hi Steffini,

Gaviscon works in a slightly different way to Tagamet, or Zantac. I don't think it would be harmful for a dog, but I don't actually know
Zantac, on the other hand is something I know is OK to give to dogs. It contains ranitidin instead of cimetidin as in Tagamet, but both substances work in the same way.
150 mg of Zantac would be my guess of how much to give. Can't you get help with the dosage from your chemist, or maybe give your vet a ring?

My JRT has been on Zantac for a while just coming off it now.  The vet put him on it as he was anemic and suspected an ulcer.
So yes Zantac is safe for dogs, but I would just ring your vets and ask over the phone incase your dogs treatment is different and it wouldn't suit him.

Gaviscon ingredients are high in Sodium & dogs do not tolerate high sodium levels(Sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate.)Zantac also contains a high level of sodium as well

Metacam gives my boy ulcers bad enough to hospitalize him. I have him on glucosamine/chondroitin to help his joints. Others on the board have had good results with this supplement as well. I don't know how bad her pain is and if an alternative would work in your situation, but maybe something to consider?
