Apologies - I know there are loads of weeing in bed posts but I am still at a loss of best way to proceed.  I have been crate training my 18 week ridgeback puppy since he was 81/2 weeks old (got him at 71/2 weeks but had him in box in bedroom at first).   I started off by getting up every 2 hours to let him out and gradually built up until he was clean through til about 6 which is when i get up so that was great.  However, since the clocks going forward it has all gone to pot!  He always asks to go out if he needs to poo - and never does poo in his crate.  Since the clocks going forward his need to poo has moved from 6am to 4ish - obviously no one told him the clocks only went forward an hour!.  However he is perfectly happy to wee in his crate.  I got so fed up with washing vetbed daily that i changed half the crate to newspaper and half is his vetbed.  Last week i decided to take a step back and set my alarm for 3.45 so i could get up before he needed to wee, he never really wanted to go out that early but would and did have a wee.  I gradually moved the time forward so that by this Tuesday it was set for 4.45 - unfortunately at 4.30 i heard him wine so i sprinted downstairs - still half asleep (!) to find that he had weed in his crate - i let him straight out and he had a poo, then back in his crate.  Last night i thought - ok back to 4am - but at 3.30 he woke up and wined again i shot down and again he'd weed.  I'm seem to really be in tune with his wines and i'm sure i'm awake and down stairs within minutes - if not seconds - of his first cry however he's always already been and is obviously wining to go for a poo. I dont expect him to last the night however how can i get him to wine when he needs to wee as well as to poo - i'm pleased he's got it this way round tho!!  Any one got any suggestions?  Is the newspaper a bad idea?  Trouble is i know he'd just use the vet bed if i didn't put newspaper down.  Should i put a divider up in the crate so that he would have to wee right on where he has to sleep if he needed to go?  As i said, i am happy to get up in the night - i just feel that he really doesn't think there is a problem with weeing and as he is hapy that he needs to wine to go for a poo - why does he treat the two calls of nature differently?  He is always let out last thing but never seems to want to have a poo - he is fed about 6.30.  He is fed dry food so i dont feel too happy with restriciting his water although he doesn't have any in his crate.  As i say, its not the getting up thats the problem but the fact that i'm getting up and he's already been.  Any suggestions anyone?  H

If he was able to go right through until 6 am and now he isn't, despite being fed and put out at the same time, i'd be worried he might have an infection.
Does he need to wee more frequently through the day as well, if so maybe worth a checkup?
When you put him out at night do you know for sure he has done something? I ask this because if i let my dog out he just goes for a wander round the garden to see what's around, and comes in without doing anything. He only goes for a wee if i let him out on a lead, and just stand in one place until he performs, then i let him have a wander, if he wants to.

Thanks for your response.  He doesn't need to wee in the day anymore than usual - probably between 8am and 6pm he goes 4 times max.  I do watch him when he goes - i was standing out with him saying 'do wee' etc and giving him a biscuit but found he started cutting off before he'd finished in order to get the biscuit!!  He'd then go again a few mins later!  Maybe worth standing out again however i think i will get him checked out.  Thanks

Try giving the treat once he has finished. As my pup was actually performing I used to say " good boy, busy", which was the word we used, and gave him the treat as soon as we could see he was about to finish weeing. I also used to take him into the garden on his lead so he was unable to wander around and he fairly quickly learnt that lead on in the garden meant it was a toilet expedition :)

I would divide the crate and make it smaller so that he hasn't got the room to wee outside of his bed - most dogs will not toilet where they sleep. If he has room to wee in his crate, but not in his bed, he will make the most of it.

Perhaps it would be worthwhile for a few nights to get up to him every 2-3 hours, as you did when he was younger, which hopefully won't give him the opportunity to have an accident in his crate. Sometimes you have to take a few steps backwards in order to progress. :)

It has been pretty warm the last couple of weeks so is he drinking a lot after running about, adn therefore needs to pee more often?

Also birds start twittering from about that time.  Maybe he is waking, and then needs to go?

Or maybe the light is waking him up - perhaps you could cover his crate with something light proof?

If it is early mornign sounds waking him it might be worth putting him to bed with the radio on fairly low, then he won't be disturbed by outside sounds.
