Topic Dog Boards / Health / Things Don't Seem Right

Hi all,

Thanks for reading

Those of you who know me are gonna say I told you that pup will be trouble, but here goes anyway

Firstly, my bitch hasn't long been spayed and we have a 8 week old pup, the problem I am having is because I am sure due to my bitch being spayed she thinks this newby pup has come from her, she has gone off her food now and is drinking plenty trying to bring her milk in obviously theres nothing coming through but her nips have gone saggy and the pup keeps trying to suckle off her (we now have to keep them in seperate rooms).

I am worried now because they are saggy and she has been spayed, will they ever go back to normal ?, has anybody been through this themselves ?.

Also I wormed the pup a fortnight ago but he still has the runs from the panacur, he is due for his injections tomorrow and to be wormed again, is it a bit much for me to go ahead with the both of them as he still has the runs from the first lot.

I am just gonna say this before anyone starts, I am asking for a little advice, I don't want or need to be the centre of a discussion, if you don't have anything nice to say or related to this topic then please do not bother yourself with posting

Sarah firstly I'm sorry to hear that people would not be friendly when you just ask for simple advice and I hope that doesn't turn out to be the case.
I don't know how long ago your girl was spayed, it could be as recent as last week or 6 months ago.  If it was very recently then you must allow for all her hormones to settle.  I don't think she will feel the pup has come from her as such unless she was going through or about to have a phantom pregnancy when she was spayed.  Its hard to answer that one not knowing how long ago she was spayed, but I would perhaps take her in with you when the pup is due the 2nd jab to get her checked over.  She could have some sort of infection that is causing her to drink more and because the pup is now in the house you are relating it to that.

Your pup should not have its 2nd jabs if it still has the runs.  To have the runs this long is not ideal so I would go along on your appointment time and again discuss this with your vet.  You don't want your little one getting dehydrated.
The fact that they both seem not themselves I wonder if they have picked up an infection or virus that is manifesting itself in slightly different ways due to thier ages.  Whichever I think a trip to the vet for a check up would be the best plan.

If the pup is 8 weeks and only just been wormed it won't need doing again until 12 weeks and then monthly until 6 months, though some people say after 12 weeks it is fine to go to 3 monthly as with adults.

I have had some pups react with the runs to Panacur (still use it as it is a good wormer), and would not worm your pup again at this time.

My one & only Border Collie bitch had been spayed for 3 years when I rescued a 10 day old kitten, not only my bitch did she mother him she came into milk for him ! When I managed to wean him off her(difficult becuase she was only too willing)she eventually went back to her previous trim under carriage. The cat however was affected all his life-he thought he was a dog & behaved like one !

Sarah I just want to say how important it is NOT to have your puppy's vaccinations until he is in perfect health - very very important!

Thankyou all for your information, my bitch was spayed just over a fortnight ago.

The vets said to worm every two weeks untill 12 months of age and then every 3 months then onto to 6 months etc,  its his firtst jabs he is coming up to but I will make sure he doesn't have the injections untill he is fine, I woke this morning to the first hard poo in a fortnight but will wait another couple of days to see what comes

I'm sorry but that is way overkill and not what the manufacturers advise on any except the pet shop wormers that are piperazine only as they are not as effective and only kill adult worms so need to be administered more frequently in  pups.

I have gone off googling and there is no advice that gives a frequency of more than monlty for pups over 12 weeks old that have ahd the usual worming as whelps.

In fact in USA this sort of prophylactic worming is rarely used instead they prefer to do faecal sampling to indicate when worming needs to be repeated.

Breeders that I am in contact with are horrified at the way we just dose our pups so frequently.

<The vets said to worm every two weeks untill 12 months of age and then every 3 months then onto to 6 months etc>

Brainless - I read this as a "spelling" mistake, I think it should be "The vets said to worm every two weeks untill 12 WEEKS of age and then every 3 months then onto to 6 months etc". That would be more normal.

Oh I hope so.  I am always glad when I get past the frequent worming stage as I always find it affects them even if only a little.

except the pet shop wormers that are piperazine only

did you mean that pet shop wormers can contain piperazine or that the wormer called piperazine is available from the pet shop?  piperazine citrate is a prescription drug.

i worked in the vet section at a rescue for some time and the wormer 'piperazine citrate' was prescribed to most of the adult dogs.

Typed too quickly did mean pet shop wormers and those that are piperazine.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 14.04.07 09:47 UTC
It is one of the older wormer and I expect much cheaper than the more modern ones
- By SarahLouise [gb] Date 17.04.07 23:07 UTC
Yeah sorry just read through the posts.  It was meant to say every 2 weeks untill 12 WEEKS lol of age etc

Sorry should have typed more carefully, didn't mean to worry anyone
