Topic Dog Boards / Health / Panacur has given my puppy diarrhea

Hi, I have a pup due to go imminently, he's just finished 3 days of Panacur & has started squirting everywhere.

I have started Pro-Kolin this afternoon, the new owners had already set off to come to get him - I would have suggested they delay him going to them, but as they've already driven a considerable way I am not sure whether to allow him to go with the Pro-Ko?

I wouldn't let a puppy go if it wasn't 100% healthy.  But then I also wouldn't be worming just before they were due to go to their new homes. :(
I would consider that you are putting your reputation on the line to let him go squirting everywhere.

Yes, I completely understand where you are coming from as am not completely comfortable with it myself, but wasn't sure if I was being a worry wart.  The other pup is fine, he has had the same worming treatment - no squirty botty, so it's obviously an individual sensitivity thing.
I was unavoidably a little late worming him this third time as I was caught on an errand of mercy elsewhere for a few days.  Now feeling a bit cross and wish I had used Stronghold as planned, poor lamb.
I feel a compromise could be achieved, and once the new owners have met Mum & Dad and seen puppy and his home environment then I can offer to drop him off in their home at the end of the week when he's better.  This way I also get to home check them :)

Then I would have delayed collecting the pup for at least 3 days after the final worming. :)  Filling a puppy with chemicals can often have an adverse reaction to varying degrees.:(

Have the owners not already met the Mother and litter?

Regardless of personal circumstances, I feel that we owe the new owners the very best before taking their money and handing over the puppy. :)

This is why I now worm at 7 weeks so that they have it all out their systems before they go to their new homes, as I always find some react.

Yes Brainless, your very good advice was my intention, as we'd discussed this previously I remember.  As it turns out although the couple were coming a long way, I actually didn't really feel they were suitable when they got here, so I'm not letting them have him.  They had pushed to come up over the Easter which was sooner than planned, which I now realise was possibly because they were on holiday from work.  I wish there was a sure fire way to find out if people genuinely are at home all day or not.  They let it slip by accident in a contradiction to what they'd previously told me.  They were very good in many other ways, but I just can't see the point in leaving a dog on it's own all day while the owners work full time.

So in a way it was lucky he wasn't quite ready to go.  Good luck with getting him just the right home, adn I am sure after a day or two he will be right as rain.

Totally agree Goldengirl, I never allow my pups to go somewhere where someone isn't at home for the majority of the day. I always go on my gut instinct now and have caught people out before about things they have told me and contradicted. I always take a phone number to talk to prospective owners and never take initial reservations via e-mail. Always ask for a landline number, have a chat, invite them down to see parent/s before whelp, ring in the day, you will soon get a feel for them. If they never answer during the day only at night it is obvious that they work even though they may have told you otherwise. I usually if get no answer try a couple more times during the day and again the next day but ring then at night if had no answer.

I have had problems before with panacur with two litters in the past, gave them very bad squits, touch wood I have been using drontal now for 10 years with no adverse reactions.

Hope your little man soon recovers and the right home will come along for him soon I am sure.
