Well for the past seven years since we moved into our house there has been a yearly chicken run in the field behind us. The field is owned by a large disabled community who grow their own veg and have their own livestock so are quite self sufficient. Anyway, every year, the week before easter they march around the field picking up litter so that the sheep and lambs can go into the field soon. I understand that bit!!

However, at the front of the procession one of the children always has a long wooden pole with a fancy wooden chicken on the top

I don't get it???? Why???
Is this some ritual???
It always amuses us because every year it causes arguments between the children as to who is going to hold the chicken ;-D (am I cruel?? ;-D)
