Just wondering if anyone can tell me how often these can be given to dogs, pizzles is what our local pet shop calls them but im lead to believe they are actually the bulls penis, can anyone confirm this just out of curiosity please.

Thankyou in advance

Yep that is what they are and they last a fair while, though the one I had for them was about 3 feet long and I only bought the one so they had to take turns which was a pain.

I bought a whole sack of cow hooves for £50 instead, which we have nearly used up, but they lasted siocne last summer.

errrr! Thankyou Brainless for your reply, i only buy two a week at the moment as im not sure how many a cav is ideally allowed in a week, (worried about the fat piling on as cavs are prone to weight gain)
They are only about 4 to 6 inch long and are priced at 49p. My girl will not entertain anything else, hooves, ears, snout nothing just her adored PIZZLES. They last a good couple of hours but i always remove it from her after half an hour or so and then give back later in the day.

Feeding her these will now and forever bring a small grin to my face now i know for sure what they are.

Thankyou again

kind regards julie

Anyone know what they do to prepare/preserve these things?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.03.07 19:46 UTC
I assumed they were dried in a kiln, they do not seem to be greasy like the pigs ears whcih are fried???
- By Floradora [gb] Date 02.04.07 07:19 UTC
Val,
Was told that these are airdried in a machine that evaporates all fluid from them, urgh dosen't bear thinking about really.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 02.04.07 07:31 UTC
I think it is brilliant that nothing is wasted.

Wasn't there a saying about pigs that everything could be used except the squeak.  I think the modern squeamish person certainly would not eat most of the pig.
- By Floradora [gb] Date 02.04.07 07:56 UTC
At my local cash and carry they also sell the fried squeek. At least as you say nothing wasted.

I know that pigs' ears are fried and rawhide chews are treated with bleach etc, so I didn't know what they did to willies! ;)  I'd have no problem giving them raw but I do wonder wonder when things are processed. :(
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.03.07 19:42 UTC
I don't know if they have much fat, as would have thought them primarily skin, dried muscle and sinew, anyone on anatomy of bulls parts???
- By iluvacav [gb] Date 30.03.07 19:48 UTC
Still not got the hang of posting on here properly, can you tell me when im answering peoples replies do i hit my reply button or the persons im replying to cause the replys seem to be out of order,

Never thought to deep about what the make up of a bulls parts are but yeah i  guess that makes sense.

Think i may google it anyway its got me thinking about preservation treatments etc now.

I thinks ive opened a can of worms ..

Are they cooked or dried or what? please
- By iluvacav [gb] Date 30.03.07 19:50 UTC
Oh i think i got the hang of this replying now Sorry, and thankyou for your patience.

Harley, they do look cooked to me,dark brown and hard ooops no pun intended.
- By Harley Date 30.03.07 19:54 UTC
Do you think they are fried as then the fat content would, I presume, be quite high. I am asking as I would be quite interested in trying our dog with one but am not so keen if they are fried due to the fat content - perhaps McCains do an oven fried variety :D
- By newfiedreams Date 30.03.07 20:24 UTC
Harley I think they are dried...like pigs ears!
- By Harley Date 30.03.07 20:25 UTC
Thank you - I didn't know pigs ears were dried either but assumed they were fried as well. Looks like I might have to go and get one tomorrow :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.03.07 20:35 UTC
I am reliably informed that pigs ears are fried, maybe some are dried?
- By newfiedreams Date 30.03.07 20:38 UTC
Yeah they could be...I tend to steer away from the fried ones and go for more of the 'biltong' sorta dried stuff...
- By Harley Date 30.03.07 20:48 UTC
OK - treat cancelled then :D
- By newfiedreams Date 30.03.07 20:57 UTC
confusing and frustrating 'aint it???!!! ;)
- By MariaC [gb] Date 30.03.07 21:24 UTC
I'm concerned as OH knew exactly what a pizzle was
- By Spender Date 30.03.07 21:32 UTC
Hollings PE's are air dried, Bull pizzles too.  They make jerky kebabs as well, our dogs love them.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.03.07 22:47 UTC
Is that the trade stand at shows with these itmes.  I noticed their PE's being much drier than the oens in pet shops which were greasy.
- By Spender Date 02.04.07 20:45 UTC
Don't know, B, last show I was at was in 1986.    We get them from a local pet store; I couldn't get them in PAH.  They have a website - http://www.hollings.uk.com

BTW, Agree with Chamsong, the PE's do appear waxy.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 31.03.07 05:01 UTC
I buy the air dried Hollings Pigs Ears from the cash and carry. They're not greasy but can sometiems be waxy!
