Why do we do it ??
I am hoping to use my dog on one of my bitches. Not "perfect" matches pedigree wise but fantastic matches health wise, which in my opinion, in my breed is more important (Just thought I would mention that)
Anyway, shes had one litter used an outside dog no problems 3 matings day 11,13 and 15 = 4 pups
He has sired a litter but what a palava   He messed around for 3 days, on off on off sniff lick then layed down next to her and went to sleep.  This went on until day 13 where he mated and tied and again on day 14 = 4 pups
Incidentally he wont let anyone handle him either, we have to sit back and as soon as he enters get there quickly to control the tie - always within 2 steps away fully supervised.
My bitch is now on day 11 and it's pretty much the same as the last time he was used so why the hell am I getting stressed !!!
She is standing, flagging and generally being a total hussy, as she whelped on day 63 last time we think she caught from the first mating so I'm worrying like crazy now that she's ready today and that he won't mate her ARGHHHHH

As an added thought, there is so much emphasis on my breed not to use stud dogs until 2.5 years due to a reccomended health test that needs doing that I waited had him tested and then tried to use him, I wonder if he was used younger if he would have been easier to "handle"

Anyway just wanted to put my frustrations down, and ask WHY do we do it !!!!!

Lydia

I know of a stud dog that wasn't used until later in life. He didn't have any problems at all :D

It sounds like she just isn't ready yet. Bitches can be ready on different days for different seasons so be patient. And no, I don't know why we do it. I'm waiting to find out if my bitch is pregnant. I think she is, I'm sure she is, but I don't want to get too hopeful until she definately is ;)

You might need to have someone hold her still. My bitch just wanted to play until I grabbed her and kept her in one place. The stud dog knew what to do  :)

The first litter my first dog sired were born on his 7th birthday and he certainly didn't have a problem mating my bitch - one tie of 15 minutes on day 13 produced 14 pups.  Sounds like it's her that's not been ready!

Thanks for the replies

I would be the first to say to someone else, Oh she isn't ready, but when it's your own bitch, your advice is not as easy to take
I wasn't blessed with much patience I'm afraid and all the waiting drives me insane!!
Waiting for season, waiting to mate, waiting for pups waiting waiting waiting....

Will update if anything to tell

Just thought I would mention that most pups are born 61 days (+ or - a day) from ovulation.

The eggs are not fertilise until around 2 days after ovulation, so conception would actually take place approximately 59 days before whelping.

So your bitch that whelped 63 days from mating didn't ovulate until probably two days later, and didn't conceive until 4 days after mating.

A dogs sperm should stay in good shape for at least 4 days and probably a week.  What I am saying is that he has probably a few days to play with, and some dogs will not mate a bitch until she is really ripe.

Also bitches can ovulate on different days in different seasons.

In my breed being numerically small often males don't have a chance to be used until they are older due to not having a suitable bitch available.

Some never get the hang of stud work.

A male I bred I tried to use on my difficult champion girl, when he was 4 and no joy.  At 6 1/2 he was used on a maiden bitch no problem and has sire litters since.

At first he would not be handled, and would climb off the bitch, but since he has had more experience it is now no problem to be more hands on.

Sounds like the dog knows to me :-)))))))

Think he wasn't messing around just telling you she wasn't ready.

Bare in mind bitches will actually stand quite a few days before they ovulate.

That is what I'm hoping. Day 13 today and still much the same.
My bitch is not impressed

Day 14 and he's a bit more interested today - he's mounting her, but missing.
Have separated them for now and will try again in a bit, at least we have a bit more interest.
Looks like he is one that won't waste his energy unless the time is spot on, hopeully
Knowing my luck he is a bit slow and has missed his chance, could only happen to me

Hi
I have a springer dog that was like this, he never showed any interest in my bitch until the the time was right then he didnt stop for about 3 days! we had to keep them seperate or else he would have worn himself to a frazzle. It was concerning as my neutered westie was 'air shagging' her (hope i can use that expression on here??) from the minute she was in season. 2 good litters from her so let him do it when he's ready.
