...The Historian by E Kostova? I'm about 3/4 of the way through it but am really struggling with it (I've been reading it since early Feb!!) & am wondering if it is worth persevering with. Can anyone help me out?

I haven't, but I read probably two books a week and find if I'm halfway through and it still doesn't 'grab' me, I give up! All the best, Dawn

I really enjoyed it and my daughter did too but my mum hated it! If i don't get into a book by chapter 4 or 5 I usually give up on it!

I did that with the Nghtwatchman (Sara Waters much anticipated book).
Took me that long to give up as I was so certain I would be sure to enjoy it as I had enjoyed her others so much!

I've been reading it for a few months (better make that stopped reading it). It's driving me nuts but I WILL finish it. I actually stopped the last Harry Potter book halfway through too, it got terribly dull and repetitive.

It's funny how, even if you're not enjoying a book, you sometimes feel compelled to carry on reading. I'm ploughing through something that was recommended to me (can't even remember what it's called, it's a thriller set some years in the future by someone writing under another name, Nora or JD or something) and I think I'm going to chuck it tonight and read something I'd enjoy.

I just wouldn't See the point in reading a book I wasn't enjoying. If It hasn't grabbed me by the time I am in the second chapter forget it.

I'm with you Barbara...just can't see the point of reading if it turns into a 'slog' After all, it is
SUPPOSED to be an enjoyable hobby!

Well cant really agree...most of my reading is done at bedtime, but if I read at other times of the day I can and do really enjoy a book that might put me to sleep if it's bedtime.
So if I dont really get into it at bedtime then I know really that it IS worth a daytime read even if it is just to finally say no and give it up.
Karen :-)

I want to read the nelson mandella book because im interested in his life - but his book is just a bit hard going !

I'm 50/50 on this debate, some books are hard work but can enrich your life e.g. most classics are hardwork & require 100% attention but can be rewarding once you've finished :) The Historian however really isn't a classic but I'm not a givver upper (is that even a word?!) so couldn't put it back on the bookshelf without finishing it! It would bug me every time I looked at it!
I did read 3 more chapters last night & managed not to fall asleep, however the alternative was to watch England vs Andorra (snnnooorrr) so that might have something to do with it.
I have Shadow in the Wind as my next book to read - has anyone read this?
