My 8 year old Bernese has a lump near his rib cage? It moves around so does not seem to be attached to anything and is about 1 to 2 cm diameter and is like a squashed ball I will be taking him to the vets tomorrow but just wondered if anyone might have any ideas???

Most likely just a fatty lipoma (nothing to do with lymphoma!), and nothing to worry about. Your vet will be able to confirm and put your mind at ease.
our swedish lapphund was covered in these lumps and bumps for a good few years as he got older. we always got the vet to check them too but they were never anything to worry about, just fatty lumps as JG says. i'm sure your vet will be able to put your mind at ease - better safe than sorry
But as Bernese are prone to cancer having it tested is a good idea. My oldest had two of these too, and as she Had previously had a suspicious lump I did have the first one checked out.
