Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Would like a few oppinions on puppy food please
- By SarahLouise [gb] Date 12.03.07 22:40 UTC
Hi all,

Thanks for looking and I do apologise if this has been posted anywhere else.

I have an older rotti who is currently on Skinners Field and Trial Hypoallergenic Duck and Rice and I must say she is doing marvelous no runny stools etc I had a few problems with her and food but thankfully its sorted, we have decided to get another rotti puppy but I am unsure as to what would be the best food to try him on.

There are so many people on here and I know everybody thinks different things are good but I would just like to get an idea as to what may be the best especially for this breed, I didn't get my older one untill she was gone through puppy stage so am a bit apprehensive about food, with my other dog I fed her on tinned and mixer pedigree chum but it went straight through her so tried many foods after that but she has settled on the skinners now aswell but I cannot feed the new pup this skinners as its adult food

Your oppinions are gratefully received
Thanks

I think you can get Skinners as puppy food - and if you're happy with the Skinners then why not try that? :)

What about using whatever the breeder rears her stock on?  After all the results are good enough to buy :)

I will ask him what he is feeding them but if I remember correctly from when I went up with my friend to purchase her rotti they were feeding 3-4 times a day scrambled egg and weetabix (or something like that) for breakfast then the other meals were home cooked food not sure whether dog food was included into their meals in all fairness they were stunning puppys and very healthy but I refuse to stand round a cooker all day for my dogs I moan enough doing it for my family lol :)

I have had a look and they do skinners puppy milk and then the food so will have a go with that,

Thanks alot both :)

won't the breeder give you a diet sheet?  they really should

If you have booked a puppy, why not contact the breeder now and ask what they feed the puppies? They will, I hope, provide you with a diet sheet but really any questions regarding what they will be eating when they leave will best be asked of the breeder. If you take puppy home, and give it a total change of diet, this may well upset its tummy, coupled with the change of home, vet visit, jab, etc so really you would do well to keep the puppy on what its already eating, even if you can only cope with this for a month. Then very gradually change over to the food you prefer. It is better to stand round a cooker than be mopping up  dia-rear and have a sickly puppy.:D

I think quite a few breeders that make up their own diets will acknowledge that owners do not always wish to do this and will be prepared to recommend a suitable diet some even introduce it for you prior to taking the puppy.

This is why I suggested she contact her breeder, see what advice they give. I certainly wouldn't reccomend changing a young puppy onto a completly different food as soon as it has left the breeders home. After all, it takes a while to get an adult settled onto a new food, never mind a young puppy that is being 'upset' enough any way with new surroundings, vaccinations, water etc. If the food is totally home made, a batch could be made up and servings frozen to be used as required. In a big pot, a weeks food could be made at one time. :) Once the pup is settled in, then new food could be introduced.

If happy with Skinners keep your pup on that, she can then move to Field & Trial maintenance after that if you wish. Skinners also do a pet version of their food also (rather than for working dogs) which is just as good. I would personally give them a call to discuss.

Pet dog food range is Health and Vitality puppy and working dog range is Field and Trial puppy

We have fed skinner for the last 10 years most of mine are now on Field and Trial crunchy, they are all healthy and get great compliments on there condition.

But different things suit different dogs as with people

Sarah- is the breeder aware that you're planning to feed skinners??
- By SarahLouise [gb] Date 15.03.07 20:53 UTC
No I don't think he is why ?

Maybe you are worrying about nothing and the new breeder may already feed that food? Personally, I would stick with what the breeder feeds at first and see how you go. If the puppy thrives on the puppy food it is being fed, then I would stick to that until you have to swop onto the next growth stage at least. By this time you will know your puppies eating habits and be able to judge what to do next. Everyone has an opinion as you say, but the bottom line is the best food is the one that agrees with your dog and your dog thrives on ;)
