The far-too-short snippet of the obedience yesterday with that fabulous Terv made me realise something - I've been so over the moon that Remy is finally (and very nicely) retrieving his dumbell, that I've completely forgotten about training him for the scent exercise.  Oops!

Whenever I've thought about it in the past, I must admit I'm a bit clueless - how should I go about training it?  I've got a Morgan Spector book to flick through, but I usually have to try a few different things before I find which works for him so I thought it best to get a few ideas! :p

LOLOL I'm not the best trainer of scent on cloths but this is what I use

I start with just two cloths one blank with a tile fastened under it(a very heavy one BTW)& a weighted (heavily scented by me)cloth. I put a treat on each to teach the dog to look at both cloths & reward heavily when he brings back the only clot he can lift up ;)

Before this however I do chuck a toy out of sight & tell him to find it so he gets used to using his nose

When he is scenting correctly I add another cloth with a tile attached & gradually build up the numbers of cloths until he is looking at every cloth & retrieving the right one. When I have him scenting over 6 cloths I remove one of the tiles & then another until the blank cloths are all just blank cloths. I always take my time & go back a step if needed so he never gets his confidence bumped

You see, that's why I posted - I would never have thought of that, not in a million years!!  Thanks :D
