Topic Dog Boards / Health / Blood in sick

Tara didn't want her breakfast this morning which is VERY unlike her :( She did eat a bit of the meat (minced tripe). She was quiet this morning (I was at work, OH was at home). At lunchtime she was a bit sick. After I went back to work she was sick again. OH had to go to Norfolk, so didn't go until 3pm, so I was home at 4.30pm. She had been a bit sick - but just clear mucousy, but with small flecks of bright red blood in it. She seemed fine on her walk, but I didn't give her any dinner tonight. She has just been a bit sick again - again fairly clear, but with some blood in it :( :( She was wormed last night (Drontal). She doesn't chew things (apart from the odd bit of a stick when out on a walk). Obviously if she is still like this in the morning I will take her to the vet, but has anyone else had these little bits of blood in sick before ??? Tara has never been sick before and Bramble hardly ever, so have not had much experience.

Hi Daisy,

the fact that it's such a minor amount (using the word "flecks" as my basis here), she may have damaged a tiny blood vessel if she's been hacking and wretching - hopefully that's all it is.  This happened to me with the awful flu virus over the festive period so I know it's alarming but not necessarily too much to worry about.

Fingers crossed.  Teri x

Thanks, Teri - that's what I had hoped that someone would say :) I'll keep an eye on her tonight and hope that she will be OK in the morning. It would be the night that OH is away, but if she needs to go to the vet he'll come home early - otherwise I'll take her after work :)

It's so unlike her - she's never sick :D :D

They love to worry us when we're alone, all alooooooone - little dears  :D

With a bit of TLC (for you too!) hopefully all will be settled in the morning but I'd visit the vet tomorrow if it persists :)

Just let her in from the garden, she is still bringing up a lot of white frothy stuff :(

Is there still blood trace in it?  Any chance she has been exposed to kennel cough?

Last summer my youngster was bringing up frothy fluid for a few days without coughing which had me cnfused but the cough eventually started .....

Aw, try not to worry Daisy.  Have you a thermometer to check her temp?  If you can set your mind at rest that she's otherwise OK then at least you'll not spend the night pacing the floor.  If you do feel she's worsening though could you maybe call your emergency vet and get some advice over the phone????

Sorry - more Qs than As

Doubt it, although you never know :) This is quite thickish white froth still with a few bits of blood, but not a lot :D :D

She's now stretched out in the kitchen feeling sorry for herself :(

I haven't got a thermometer :(

Molly was doing this yesterday, then she started projectile dire-rear which was extremely liquidy with blood in it  thankfully after 36 hours with no food, she is much better,
hopefully Tara will improve over the next day or so :)

I'm assuming that Molly ate something she shouldn't

Hi Daisy,

how is she this morning?  Hope you both had a peaceful night.  Upate when you can.

No sick anywhere when I went down this morning, so I gave her some rice and chicken. Had to go to work, so crossed fingers :( Came back at lunchtime - no sick anywhere. She seemed a bit quiet, but took her out for a walk. She was OK until halfway round, then started to stop and look at me :( When I got back she refused her half bonio that they always get after their lunchtime walk :( Then I noticed that she had brought up the rice on the lawn :( Had to go back to work :( When I came home she seemed very much brighter and enjoyed her walk and was obviously wanting her dinner - so I gave it to her  Just waiting to see what happens now :D :D

Hmmm, think I'd be inclined to have her vet checked now Daisy - particularly as it's unusual for her to be sickly :(

Hopefully it's a minor bug but better too soon making the trip than possibly letting her deteriorate if it's something which needs medicating.

I've got the girls crossing their paws ;)  Teri

Tara seems to be on the mend :) She hasn't thrown up again and ate her breakfast this morning, albeit a bit slower than usual :) Poos were fairly normal - so she doesn't appear to have a blockage etc :) Hopefully by tomorrow she will have her usual spark back :)

Thanks, Teri et al :)

Hi Daisy,

I'm glad Tara is perking up :)  Thanks for the update.

It happened to me too when I had bronchitis last year!  It is worrying at the time and hopefully it's nothing.

I would still get her checked out tomorrow at the vets though - just to be on the safe side!

Last time we used Drontal we had a problem with the other end - little flecks of bloody mucus  Vet said it was probably a reaction to the wormer and now alternates between Panacur and Drontal each time. Used the Drontal a couple of months ago and there wasn't a problem this time.

I would give your vet a ring in the morning and ask if the Drontal may have caused the problem. Hopefully your dog will soon be feeling better :)

It happened to Milo when he got an ulcer from taking Metacam. Lots of clear fluid vomiting followed by pink/bloody fluid. I hope she starts feeling better.
- By GoldenGirl3 [gb] Date 07.03.07 14:18 UTC
Lori how long was Milo on metcam before this happened?  I am having to give this daily to my Chihuahua who has hurt his back.

He already suffers with an irritated bowl since his booster vaccination and it's like being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.
- By Lori Date 07.03.07 15:25 UTC
Milo was on it for 3 months Chi-Chi. Ended in a midnight run to the hospital for IV fluids. :-(
- By GoldenGirl3 [gb] Date 14.03.07 10:56 UTC
Lori I am so sorry to hear that.  I've stopped the Metacam now.  I used to give it to my dog first thing in the morning, but one morning I had an appointment and left it until I got back.  He was much happier and whizzing around the kitchen.  So I have kept him off it now following the 10 day stint for his back.
- By Lori Date 14.03.07 15:52 UTC
The metacam killed his appetite when he first started taking it but that's not hard. He's not much of a foody. He's right as rain now and fully recovered from the ulcer. He just got on without the pain meds and did fine. I hope your boy does too.
