hi all, i bought 3lb each of pigs liver & pigs kidneys from tescos , today , really cheap . , with the idea of feeding it to my dogs. their usual diet is JWB dry & raw chicken wings , and i sometimes cook up mince with veg & pasta for them. Would i need to cook this offal , or feed raw? is it very rich ? any advice or recipe ideas appreciated. :) my dogs are mini dachsies & a chinese crested & weigh between 8lb -11lb, they are all very greedy, speedy eaters !!
thankyou

My Dobe has liver and kidneys raw. For some reason he refuses point blank to eat offal from pigs though  Someone suggested it's because it has a much stronger taste than offal from other animals. Liver is renowned for causing the squits - when I first started feeding it my boy's stomach could only handle a very small amount (he weighs just under 100lbs), literally just a teaspoon or two - now he has liver twice a week (150g each time, although he also has a chicken carcass once a week with the offal still inside) and kidneys (100g) once a week. I'd be inclined to only give them a tiny amount (you do have to be careful with liver even if your dogs have cast iron stomachs as it is very high in vitamin A which can be toxic).
Hope that helps :D

I once heard that offal should only be fed proportionately to the rest of the carcass. I'd think about 2%-5% of the diet should be about right. Liver particularly is well-known for causing loose bowels and, as Zarah rightly points out, certain vitamins can be toxic in large quantities.

I find the only way that my older dog will eat liver is to whizz it up (raw) in the food processor with raw carrot :) Goes down quick as lightening then, although looks disgusting :D :D :D

I feed my dog raw, but when I give him raw liver or kidney he plays with it, tosses it around and tries to kill it

So I have to whizz it up in the processor with his veg mix!
I think offal should be fed in proportion to the rest of their food, (only a small amount) so I'd probably cut this into small portions and freeze it until needed :D :D :D

I feed totally raw and offal makes up around 10% of the diet for our dog. He eats it raw - took a while for him to relish it :D but be careful when first introducing it as it can give them a dire rear

try a small amount to begin with and build up from there. He took a little while to believe kidney was edible but I just whizzed it with some mince to begin with, gradually began just chopping into smallish pieces and now just feed them whole. :)

What about making that liver cake treats ive heard about, could it be used for that too?

Thanks all !!! ive just searched on here for the liver cake recipe , i think ill try making a few batches of that :) ill probably use a bit of the kidneys cooked and add it to the cooked chicken & veg , in small amounts . & freeze the rest .

Of course, you could always treat the family to liver and devilled kidneys :D :D :D and just give the dogs some treat sized pieces ::D :D :D
