does anyone have tips to encourage my 13week pup to walk on the lead Hubby has been taking him down the school since we got him but he has been carried, today he was allowed to walk and he  just sat there and refused to move

What a cutie, what breed is he?

Have you tried practicing with a collar and lead in the house and also in the garden?  I don't think many pups like leads initially, but with practice they are usually ok!

If he is food orientated then you could try a treat in front of his nose too.

I'm sure he'll get the hang of it soon, good luck and keep us posted with his progress!

I always have collars on my puppies from the day they arrive home(LOL I keep the small ones for reuse)I use rolled leather ones I was given many years ago. This way the puppy gets used to waring a collar & quickly ignores it. I then(only under supervision)leave avery short light lead attached so they get used to having something attached to the collar, however I ever teach heelwork on lead. With titbits & toys I do a couple of minutes several times a day getting my puppies to walk with me off lead, it doesn't have to be really close at first just as long as they follow me, I then work on getting the puppy in a normal heelwork position by luring in using very tasty titbits again only for a couple of minutes.

By the time they are ready to meet the outside world I usually have them walking normally off lead, I then attach a very light lead & do some lead training at the dog club. I've never had a problem getting a puppy to walk on a lead & because I train off lead they never learn how to pull

You could try reverse walking take the puppy a little way down your drive or path & have someone call him back into the house & then treat & loads of praise. Gradually increase the distance & hopefully the puppy will enjoy it & walk both ways  It worked for a friend of mine who had a very very stubborn Dandie Dinmont who at six monhs old was still not walking on the lead

I'm assuming his never been on a lead before and all of a sudden you put him on the floor and expected him to walk where so far he has always been carried?

I would suggest what moonmaiden said.  get him used to a lead and collar in the house/garden first :)

He is a rough collie and a really cheeky chappy he has always had a collar on since he first came home and we put the lead on regularly even in doors we have tried in the house and garden and have done for the past 4 weeks its always the same he doesnt bother with the lead or collar its just as soon as he is on the floor with the lead on he plants his bum and takes root he isnt food orientated nor is he overly bothered with toys he is a people dog so far but even walking off as far as the lead will let us he still refuses to walk anywhere
we have tried carrying just past the house then putting him down he just wont move he doesnt even wriggle to get down he is getting heavy though and we wont be able to carry him far for much longer

>we have tried carrying just past the house then putting him down

Try again only this time just outside the house & you go indoors & resist the temptation to pick him up. You coulld do this using the back door if you don't have a drive or pathway out front

When do you train him ? I always train before a meal is due this heightens the lure of the titbit which is usually chicken or liver(cooked with garlic)

we have used chicken and liver amd a few shop bought packs of treats and he isnt that bothered we usually train first and feed after we take him in the back garden he will just go to sleep we always leave the door open and he comes in when he is ready hubby sugested shutting the door to see if that bothered him but I dont like that idea I dont want him scared . In doors he comes when he is called and sits and does the down without any treats and has never needed them he was just happy with a fuss.

My brother had problems with is Staffie pup trying to walk him, he would just sit down and refuse to move!
I suggested to him that he either takes him to a quiet park and play having a light weight lead attached to his collar, and also suggested he get his children and wife to help encourage him to walk i.e have them walk in front and call the dog and praise him when he moves towards them.
I told him he needs to make the lead and collar fun for the pup, you may look like a complete loony down on your knees in front of your pup trying to encourage him to come, but it does work and each time you move a bit further away.
Joining a puppy class will also help I would have thought
Good Luck!!

The kids play with him all the time he follows them everywhere and will play happily in the garden with them untill they put on his lead then he takes root even with me holding the lead and them away in front calling him like mad

Have a word with your breeder.  Rough Collies can be notoriously difficult to lead train. :(

spoke to his breeder this afternoon she has given some advise we have made some progress we are changing his lead for a very light one and have found that although he isnt food oreinentate he is very passionate about chicken roll not the best thing I know but needs must I guess

My pup has just started walking properly on the lead and she is now 4 months old. So just take it day by day. Are you going to go to training classes? I just sat and watched the first couple of weeks and let her play with another pup, then the following week had her up on the floor and table to see how she got on.
