Topic Dog Boards / Health / dog being sick....
- By MW184 [gb] Date 23.02.07 18:20 UTC
Hi

This is my firs experience of my dog not being well.  He hasnt eaten today - I usually give him chicken wings in the morning before I go to work but OH has been home with him today and didnt give him anything.  He was sick this afternoon - just looked like white foam apparently, and now since I have been in he has had a drink of water and brought that straight back white foam/water on the floor.

Do I see how he is in the morning?  Should  feed him his kibble for dinner or not?

Any thoughts appreciated

It may be just because he was hungry.  Many dogs will throw up foamy bile if their stomach is empty.  My boy used to do it in the early hours of the morning (about 5am or so) so he gets a biscuit or a piece of toast at bedtime now and it rarely happens now.

I would go ahead and feed him as normal.

he has a chicken wing in one bowl, and in another bowl some small pieces of ham, some small pieces of toas with light butter, and a few kibble biscuits - wont take anything at the moment....

I'll see if I can get him to take something

thanks for your help

Turning his nose up at everything, even best fresh ham

If he doesn't want to eat, then it may be something more than just an empty stomach.  It may be best to leave the food for now and see how he is in the morning. Does he seem off-colour at all? If his lack of appetite continues and you are concerned, a quick trip to the vet might be in order just to be on the safe side and set your mind at rest.

he is just fairly quiet and lethargic - OH has just picked the lead up though and he seems interested to go out so he is going to take him just down the road and see how he copes and feels when he gets back.

and if he doesnt perk up he will definitely go to the vet in the morning

He wasnt well when he went out - so I've called the vet - taken their advice.  No food - just water.  If he gets worse through the night take him to their vet hospital otherwise leave him till the morning ,cooked chicken tomorrow lunchtime and if no better they have a vet at my surgery from 2pm.

thanks

Poor boy :(

Hopefully it's nothing too serious and he'll perk up soon but it's always a worry when they're sick.  Keep us posted, won't you please?

Oh poor thing.
Has he maybe eaten something thats got stuck? or irritated him somehow?

I'm positive this happened to Molly last year, same symptoms, only for the life of me I can't remember what the outcome was, it couldn't have been too serious or I would remember straight away. I just hope it isn't too serious for your boy.
I know I'm no help but keeping fingers crossed anyway

He has really brightened up - OH took him out and a rather unpleasant episode seems to have cleared his system through.

He came back brighter, bouncier and ravenous - so I have let him eat but not too much.

Back to his normal self already so I think Missie you were right something was obviously temporarily bothering him...

Much happier now - thanks for your help shaynlola and missie

Oh glad to hear that Maxine :)

I *think* I remember what it was now  I seem to recall she had eaten some pebbles, and after a biopsy the vet discovered a very small peice of rose bush twig that had embedded itself somehow. After that was removed, and the pebbles 'dispelled' she stopped being sick. It was just white foamy kind of sick, but like your boy, she wouldn't eat and was even sick after drinking.
Just to be on the safe side though, I would just feed him smaller amounts, and maybe a bit of cooked chicken till you know for definate that its all clear?

Great news Maxine :)

I'd agree with Missie, just small amounts of bland food (chicken & rice, scrambled egg (no milk) or white fish) to give his digestive system a rest until you're sure he's 100%.

I think there may be something going around.  My 12.5 year old was unsettled during Thursday night and ate grass while out on her morning walk then was sick.  Now everything okay but my 10 year old is doing the same today and is off her food.  Has just been sick and a bit quiet so I will just keep and eye on her for today.

Thank you both - I am taking your advice on the food - little amounts but more frequently.  He is right as rain today - playing and jumping -

thanks again and I hope your dogs get over this too Alison,

Maxine
