Topic Other Boards / Foo / Replacement Bargeboards, fascias & sofits
- By Houndlover [in] Date 19.02.07 23:27 UTC
Our 2 neighbours recently had their bargeboards, fascias & sofits replaced by Anglian glazing.  We had a man from Anglian quote us earlier this evening as we are considering having them done or else the wood will need painting!
He quoted £4700 odd for our 4 bedroomed detached house.
Does this sound reasonable? We have not commited ourselves till we have at least another quote - anyone had similar done recently?

No I don't think it sounds reasonable at all.  You don't know the total linerage of the work do you?

We replaced our own at a fraction of the cost- we do live in a bungalow though so not too much ladder work :)

Sounds quite expensive to me. We had a quote from Anglian for a porch and it was considerably more than the other quotes we had.
Good idea not to commit to anything until you get at least one other quote :)

We had ours done by Anglan several years ago, it was expensive but the quality is very good.

We are semi detached and our neighbour had a cheaper company do theirs 2 years afterwards and within a couple of years you could see the difference in the colour, hers went very yellow against ours which is still bright white.

Pam, I think that when having any work done on the house, personal recommendation always works better than the company's advertising!  :)

Get lots of quotes......including some from local firms.
We ended up having windows from Everest - and a door from a local chap. The quality compares, but the service from the local man was great. A good reputable local firm has more to lose and wants to maintain a reputation. The big firms couldn't really care less.
Also, if you do go with a 'big' company....wait a while, you'll start getting letters/phonecalls now they know you are interested and suprise suprise.....the price will start sliding as they offer the next 'amazing' promotion !.

In addition to getting lots of quotes and personal recommendations make sure that they remove the old wooden Fascias, soffits and bargeboards and don't just cover them up with thin UPVC.  Our next door neighbours got fleeced and it was a cover up job into the bargain

I wouldn't have believed it, if I couldn't see it every day with my own eyes, but it was only when my builders pointed it out that I noticed it (there were other things badly wrong too ;) )

Agree with Dill.  We went with roofers who had done houses of neighbours and good friends, so we could see the work.  In between doing theirs and ours the roofer's drinking problem resumed and we were not happy with our job.  Look for warranties and guarantees.
