Topic Dog Boards / Health / spaying 1 week after season

If I have a bitch spayed approximately 1 week after a season should I expect any side effects???

Have spoken to vet and he is not keen but it is for Brooke who has been ill for a long time and should have been spayed a few weeks ago and came into season!!!

At the moment you have never seen such a sad looking dog and she really is not happy.

Anyone got ideas of side effects, I know the op is harder for the vet.

Hi,

I think you would be better spaying your girl mid cycle. It is an easier operation at this point in the cycle, because there is less blood IMO ;-)

It is best mid cycle but as she has been so poorly and still is now then then maybe the benefits of spaying may well be worth it over the problems it may cause :)

It would just be the same I would presume if a bitch was to be spayed if she had Pyo :)

So long as the vet is aware that she is being spayed just after she has been in season then they can take all the precautions and be ready for any excess bleeding I would have thought. But as I am not a vet I wouldn't know for sure :)

That is what I have said all along if the bitch had pyo they'd have to do it

I know it is harder for the vet as it stands but I think I am going to push him, to get this done. When I go into the bedroom now she doesn't even wake up and if I talk to her when she is awake she just cuddles up and hangs her head.

Ok have just spoken to the vet and he wants to see her today with the view of spaying her asap. He has agreed that it is probably better to do it now than when she is so ill I have to carry her into the vets. He's still worried but I think it is the lesser of two evils.

Best of luck and will be thinking about her.Try not to worry as I am sure she will be fine :)

I'd love to do that but brooke has been ill for a long while and vet felt it was the womb causing the problem, he was going to spay her but she came into season. So he said hopefully if anything was still in there from when she lost her pups (pups had died inside her), as the cervix has never opened until now.
I was gonna leave her a month but she never gets off the bed anymore and is extremely sad. Vet and I had agreed 1 mth after season due to her health but am just wondering whether to get him to do it now even when he is not keen for the sake of her health. I have asked the vet to consider that if she goes down hill and becomes unwell he will have to do it anyhow and then may have the problem of a sick dog as well.
Since writing the first post Brooke has a horrible smell around her and a brown discharge, only just finished standing and so not out of season but am waiting for the vet to ring and come out. So decision may well be made today anyhow and may have no choice.
I just want my little girl well again and with her bright happy eyes.

Poor Brooke. :( Sometimes we have to do things when it's not ideal, but necessary. Spaying now is more likely to be tricky and possibly lead to a phantom afterwards, but if she's really poorly it might be the lesser of two evils. Let us know what the vet says.

Have seen vet this evening and we have a change of antibiotics and painkillers. Have to ring him Monday and if she hasn't picked up he will spay straight away. He wants if possible to wait a couple of weeks but has said we will wait til Monday and then take it a day at a time.
