on our walk yesterday my 6 month puppy was 'attacked' by a muzzled dog. She was pinned down and there must have been some very intimidating doggy language going on as she was yelling hysterically. I tried to shoo the dog away which gave mine time to get to her feet , only for her to be chased away by the other dog growling and snarling at her heels. She has become quite adept at reading other dogs' signs and will usually run back to me if they growl at her, or will sit a few feet away until she sees how they are going to react to her. But she didn't have a chance with this dog. I know that she couldn't be bitten because of the muzzle but what happened was that the other dog chased her out of sight which could have been very dangerous-- there were 3 of us trying to find them! Eventually she did a loop and ended up finding the friend I was with, who secured her on the lead. I was really worried! The owner of the dog was apologetic but she had absolutely no control over her dog at all. Apparently she doesn't like puppies (she's only young herself- about 2) I was gobsmacked and muttered something about maybe she needed to do a bit of work on recall. I've been thinking since that she really should have put the dog on the lead when she saw us coming, as her dog obviously has a history of this behaviour-- we walked halfway across a large field before we reached them, with my girl walking a few feet then sitting down to suss out the situation several times, so she had plenty of time to react. I'm just dreading meeting them again. Am I being unreasonable?

Gosh no, there's no excuse for that! If her dog has such problems and she has no control it should be on a lead. Bring a squirt gun with you so if she approaches again you can give her a blast of water in the face.

We just recently had a muzzled dog at our training club manage to draw blood from someone's hand when it attacked her dog. This dog has learned to bite through the muzzle.

I hope your girl is all right. We always try to immediately provide a good experience with a nice dog after a kerfuffle at the club. If it were my dog I would try to arrange to meet up with a doggy friend ASAP to give her some confidence again.

She seems fine now. Immediately aftyerwards she saw a couple of other dogs she didn't know and was a bit clingy with me,  but they were fine with her. Then she was growled at by a pair of jack russells but ran back to my side (no squeeling from her this time) My instinct was to bundle her up and keep her next to me but she's a  big girl now! (GR) I think she has coped really well-- but the suggestion of the squirter is a good one, I may well do that. Oh and she did meet up with her Bernese friend for a bit today and had a good play.

How awful for Bonnie and you must have been so worried when she was chased away :(
I don't think you are wrong to feel annoyed at the other dogs owners, I think you have every right to be annoyed and upset!
That dog should have been on a lead and the owner is at fault!

Water pistol sounds a good thing to have at hand on your future walks - sometimes I feel as though I don't have enough hands and pockets for everything I take out with Jasper.  (poo bags, ball, whistle, spray can)!

I also think it's a good idea to get her to meet a few friendly dogs over the next few days, she sounds a lovely girl :)

No you're not being unreasonable at all. Sadly as I found only too recently dogs can and do fight very well with a muzzle on -they just can't bite the same way they would, but they can still cause damage, pain and upset. That dog should have been on a lead!

what a horrible experience for you.  The other dog should definitely have been on a lead - sounds like it has real issues.  Glad to see your dog seems to be recovering from it though

how awful, this happened to flynn when he was 4months old,was pinned down by a two year old GSD which was "only playing"......(MY AR*E!!!) the owners were way back, so i shouted at it,loudly & whacked it with my lead & it turned around & ran back to the owners. When i saw them i told them what had happened & that i had hit him with my lead & they didnt seem to mind:confused::confused::confused: but thedog was just a pup & was playing:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Anyway a few months later we were out & it came CHARGING toward me with no owners in site & i just stood stuck my arms out & BELLOWED in my must dominant dog training the woodhouse way voice "WHAt ARE YOU DOING?" & it turned tail & legged it!!!!!

Anyway this dog it turned out was terrorisng lots of dogs on the walk & had actually hurt some of them, unfortunatly it then statred terrorisng small childeren & was put down :( which i believe could have been sorted IF the owners had sorted out the dog bullying
