Topic Dog Boards / Health / reaction to epi-otic
- By Lori Date 15.01.07 08:33 UTC
Just wondered if anyone has a dog react badly to Epi-otic ear cleanser. I brought my boy in Thursday for excessive dark, wax build-up; looks like a yeast infection. His ears weren't red or inflamed though. Now his ears are really inflamed and red. It looks like the skin is burnt. I'll be back to the vet as soon as they can get me in but I wondered if anyone else had seen this. It's supposed to be soothing and well tolerated.

Funny you mention that, I had exactly the same reaction with somebodys dog who I was looking after  :(
The poor boy was shaking his head with pain etc,I had an emergency appointment as he was so distressed. It was so bad that I had to take the next day off of work to look after him, I was very worried and like yours, his ears were very inflammed, burnt etc.

I queried with the vet if it could be an allergic reaction, but he thought not.

I hope your boy is feeling better soon

Lori one thing that is very useful to clean ears with when very dirty, and usually much better tolerated than anything else, is baby oil. It removes everything quite easily and afterwards you can just wipe it with something dry if needs be.

Oh thanks Marianne. I'll try that. They look so sore. :-(

Lori

It is something to do with the pH levels in the cleaner.  I used to use it and my vet told me to switch to another one as the pH levels in Epi-otic cleaner were not neutral.  (Hope that makes sense!!)

Just wondering, could the epi optic make your dog sick?
Only the other week when I cleaned Molls ears, she was shaking (more than usual as she hates having her ears cleaned  ) really trembling like, and then she went outside and promptly threw up! Its a new bottle so the first time I had used it ? I usually put it on the cotton wool first but sometimes put a few drops in the ears.

Yeah it does Jill. Doing some searches I see the pH is 2.2 ,which is quite acidic. Interesting as their advanced formula has a neutral pH that in their words "...meaning less risk of irritation."

He hasn't been sick Missie but he really cried when the vet was using it to clean his ears. Normally he likes having his ears swabbed. And he never cries out in pain. Not through all the examinations with the torn ligaments and surgery, doesn't make a sound if you step on him. So when he was crying I knew he was uncomfortable. Maybe the fear and discomfit made her stress vomit.

Hi
yes, one of mine had a really bad reaction last year; I'd opened a new bottle; it smelt different, lemony. She had no previous problems with Epi-Otic.
Next day, her ears were red, weeping pus, and she was in a lot of pain, head shaking etc. Straight to vet, who, after treatment, kindly called the makers; they had changed the formula, and the company offered to pay all the costs of treatment, which I thought was good, as we hadn't asked for that.
I'm very wary now of all ear cleaners, but have changed to what used to be Leo, (they've changed the name of that, too!)
Incidentally, the other dog also had Epi-Otic on the same day, but didn't have any reaction.

My puppy had a horrible allergic reaction to this product. His ears got swollen minutes after it was applied. He was on terrible pain, he didn't stop shaking his head. He is a little chihuahua and his ears are normally up, after the allergic reaction they came down, got red and hot. His cheeks got swollen too and run under the coach and didn't allowed me to even get near to him.
Thankfully the vet got here in 20 min and gave him a shot of steroids and within an our he got back to normal.
Be careful don't use this product.

Bought a bottle many years ago & both hounds hated it, ears red, hot & sore have not used it since or any other veterinary ear cleaner.  I was at a friends some months ago & she got a bottle of ear cleaner out to show me & both boys took one look and ran from the room!
Interested that Goldmali uses baby oil I shall try it instead of olive oil

How recent was the formula change as I haven't bought it for years.

Bought this a few years ago for mine, but had the red, hot painful ears reaction and haven't used it since.

Best results I've ever had for a dog's ears has been the baby oil recommended by Marriane.  It does need doing every day for a while, but these days we just keep an eye on them and wipe out when necessary :-D
