Topic Dog Boards / Health / Ebba's producing milk?????
- By Lea Date 14.01.07 16:31 UTC
Um, She has been acting strangely over the last few days. Hiding under the coffee table, scratching the sofa.
Very loving, trying to jump on my lamp when on here,
and now her teats are enlarging and has been licking her teats.
Just checked and she is producing milk :confused:
Phantom pregnancy?????? What should I do????

Asking the obvious question, as nobody else has and she's a fairly recent rescue - I assume she's had a season since she's been with you and you know it's not a real pregnancy?

Assuming that, depends how bad she is. Vets can give hormonal treatment, but in the first instance I'd recommend keeping her food levels down and keeping her busy to distract her.

Um well no she hasnt had a season.
But from the dates she couldnt have been caught while a stray. But the pound and rescue I dont know.
She was picked up in bradford on 4th November.
In the pound for 7 days and then taken to the rescue.
I picked her up on 2nd December. Where I can guaruntee she has not been near an entire male.
I have felt her stomach and cant feel anything at all. She has put on weight but was very thin when I picked her up, so been feeding hr up gradually.
Why keep her food down???? She is on double the other two eat and raw tripe (But run out of that at the moment)

Hi Lea,

Firstly, to be honest due to her background and the 'you never know scenario', I would personally take her for a vet check, just to double check that there really is no pregnancy, it is quite possible that something may have happened in rescue etc, especially if it went unnoticed due to a silent season.

The reason that Lily Mc has suggested cutting down her food is during pregnancy a bitch will eat and drink more, the same during a phantom, and the more she drinks and eats the more milk will be produced. Dried food is best and plenty of exercise to keep her bowels moving so as to excrete all the excess fluid produced by her body.

But if I were you before doing that I would just get her checked out by the vet first. ;-) You never know.

Thanks.
Just waiting for rescue to get back to me. So will see what Val says. But am sure she wouldnt have left a male in with her without supervision as she didnt have hr for long.
I am right in thinking Gestation is 63 days approx so she couldnt have been got as a stray as she was taken in on 4th Nov????????
I joked about what ifs just after I got her had a laugh with my parents about her suddenly producing puppies without me knowing!!!!! Lets just hope my jokes havnt come true

Hoping it's a phantom,

But just incase to clarify your dates:

As a stray she was rescued in Bradford on the 4/11 - pups due date would be 6/01/ so unlikely.

She was in the pound for a week, if she got caught there, then from 4/11 up to the 11/11 the pups would be due from 6/01 - 13/01 and afterwards, that may be a possibility???

And then if she were caught in the rescue from the 12/11 - 2/12 the pups would be due from 14/01 - 03/02

Fingers crossed for you.

Well I have pushed and prodded and done as Lucy said, really felt all over, under her ribs, and cant find anything, no lumps or bumps. And considering I have only had her 6 weeks, she was laid on her back when I started and was still laying in the same positioon 5 mins after I had finished pocking and prodding!!!!!
She is full of milk in all teats so must be having a phantom.
I cant see a pound leaving 2 entire dogs together????????? Or am I just naieve?????
Will take to vets to double check,
When dogs have phantoms, does that mean it is 60+days after they were in season????
Unless she was caught by a Jack russel I cant see her being pregnant, but only ever known a pregnant irsih sterr that had 10 pups andc she used to sleep with me and was HUGE!!!!!!
Thanks Carrington. I will relax after the 5th Feb!!!!!!!
Hopefully she was not caught through the bars at night by the jr that wandered free around the rescue centre !!! LOL

Good advice from Marina about reducing the food and increasing the excercise ;)

Have you had a really good feel just under her ribs ??

Felt everywhere but dont want to feel tooo hard just in case!!!! But cant feel anything.
Just had a reply from Val and she said a dog wouldnt have got to her there, so that would take it to 11th November. And everything was normal, her vulva is small, and teats have only just come up so nearly 100% certain it is a phantom (Never had this with Gemma!!!!)
Will ring vets tommorow!!!
And I was waiting for her to come into season to get her spayed when ready!!!

Hey Lea when a midwife felt your tummy did she do it gently or really firmly  :)

I am sure it is a just a fantom and so reduce the food and up the excercise and she will be fine ;)

Oh yes I remember, I thought she was going to push the baby through my back bone!!!!!!!
Will take Ebba with me fr a few days, just in case.
She is just getting looking as if she hasnt been starved for a year so worried about decreasing the amount of food I am giving her.

She will be fine ;)

Give her some veggies in place of her normal food ;)

Once the milk has dried up get her some Lamb Breast :) That will put a few pounds on her ;)

Cutting food down was fine, she just wouldnt eat last night!!!!!!
She seems fine other than curling up in the smallest places, and wanting to curl up with me all the time!
She is licking her back to teats quite alot, they are the ones that seem to have the most milk in them (I havnt been squeezing them at all after checking the first time as I know the milk will never dry up) So having to keep an eye on them.
Val said there was no way she could have been got there so I should be all clear, she is still running around like a loony LOL
