we have a 4 month old english pointer who is looking a little on the rather lean side, he eats plenty & does not appear to be gaining weight, he sleeps ater feeding so know hes not burning his energy off after feeding & has been wormed. we feed him on iams puppy with other bits & bobs during the day, the amount of food he eats does not tie in with his weight, no we are not overfeeding him nor underfeeding him, he aslo gets sa37 sprinkled over his food
can anyone help us to try get this pup to gain weight, we have just bought a bag of pro plan as thought maybe his iams food is not doing him any justice, maybe hes just going through that awful stage in development & at the moment he looks all legs, he is teething too
any advice would be greatly appreciated

A good food I find is Burns ,but my pup never gained weight with it,a friend of mine breeds GSD and swears by James Well Beloved.I have always used green tripe for weight gain

Aww, he's beautiful.  Have you asked his breeder for any tips on gaining weight?  They'll have the best knowledge on what the average weight for pups should be.  When keeping in touch with my dog's breeder my dog was always smaller than the one the breeder kept on but as an adult she has turned out to be on the lower side of average for her breed anyway so was worrying unnecessarily.

Green tripe

Breast of lamb is also good (I buy it complete with rib bones & feed it raw)

hi everyone & thanks for your replies to my post, yes i have been in touch with his breeder & she has been very helpful, she also said to try the tripe route too of which we already have started, i will keep you all informed as to his progress over the coming weeks & months regarding his weight, & will take note of everything you have all said here

Burns food will not put weight on your youngster. When we needed to put weight on a bitch that had lost a lot of weight after rearing a litter, we had good results with Royal Canin. It's a bit pricey, but very good. In fact all her weight was lost while being fed a regime that Burns had sent me for a bitch in whelp and raising a litter. We fed her loads of the stuff, as you do, just after whelping. She was like a skeleton, and we felt awful for using the food !!
We have gundogs, in fact setters, which like your pointer sometimes can look a bit lean.

I agree with you jmr31056 I have a curlycoated retriever,he had allergy problems with most dried foods from a young age i e scratching,runny eyes,runny bum,biting his feet and coat loss Burns rectified these problems but the poor pup was not just lean he was underweight,then Burns told me to add chicken ,veg ,nature diet and oil to his food,I always assumed after reading the Burns Web site never add anything to Burns,it was at that point I changed to raw

I am amazed that Burns recommended adding all those things to their product! Why bother feeding it in the first place! I have turned to part raw & part kibble. I have found that chicken wings & breast of lamb Have put the weight on that none of the dried foods could. Puppies do go through 'lanky' stages though, you don't want him too fat though, just well covered.
