I have a two year old bitch who has decided to start messing in the house in the night.

She will go for a wee before bed and only gets fed in the morning but every morning I wake up to a wee and a poo

NOw last night I was sitting on the couch and the little cow poo'd on the carpet right infront of me  I shouting no and took her outside...

Any suggestions this is the first time I have caught her in the act and its become a real habit...the back door was even open but she came into the house to poo

Please help!

if this only started recently ie : fireworks etc maybe she has been frightened by something? her coming into poo when door is open makes me think it is something outside that has spooked her try taking her out on the lead for a walk last thing and reasure her especially in the dark (fireworks have a lot to answer for)

Make sure she has  got a water infection cause sometimes straining to  pee makes them poo! I would take a water sample to vet to be sure.

Dont shout at her ( not saying you do ) because if it a fear that has brought it on this will only add to the problem.

Has she had a season at that can also change thier routine due to the hormone change in her body causing her to act strangely.

A tip is not to show any signs of annoyance when she does it :)

Just quietly clean it up and show her no emotion.

If you react she will think she is getting attention and may do it even more :)

What is the last time she goes out in the evening and is it in the back garden or for a walk ?

Also what was the weather like last night as it was blowing a gale here :)

She isnt scared at all, shes a very condifent little dog and she does it bold as brass. She will go into the garden have a sniff around then come in and poo

I told her no and took her outside ...

How can I stop her doing it , if I cant catch her in the act?

She goes out in the garden last at about 9pm  and I walk them at 6 when I get home and she will always do a wee and a poo.....she is like a pooing machine I dotn know where it comes from..

Luckily she is on burns which means her poos are all very solid and easy to pick up!!!

I dont think she does it for attention I think she thinks the house is a loo !

So where do we go from here? If I see her doing it what should I do..? I have put her in a crate when she goes to sleep but she will go in the crate! Dirty little girl

9.00pm is quite early for a last toilet can you take her out later mine have a last toilet around 11.30-120oam .
If she has been clean upto 2yrs old then something must have changed in your routine?
- By Blondi [eu] Date 09.01.07 14:34 UTC

Does she think her crate is her safe place as she is free to go in at anytime rather than when you decide she has to go in ? Also how long has this being going on and when did she have her season ?

I have 3 dogs so she will jump in her crate for a snooze or when she wants to have a nibble on her bone and doesnt want the other dogs near. She is always very happy to go in her crate as she always gets a treat in there...I also feed her in her crate. Its actaully one of the Crofts freedom pens so is pretty big.

This has been going on for the last 2 months.. she was in season in June and due back in any time now.

MMMm I wonder then if it is her hormones then

Have you thought about changing her feed time as well ?
- By Blondi [eu] Date 09.01.07 14:43 UTC
Maybe I could feed her pm rather than Am.

I just thought If I fed her in the evnig s she would be more liekly to need a poo in the night...

the pesky little pup.

Or even try and feed her twice a day maybe ? Have a go and see if it works :)

Used to feed her twice a day but cut back to one.. maybe this is why
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 09.01.07 14:52 UTC
That seems to be a very likely cause. Was there a particular reason you changed to a single daily meal?
- By Blondi [eu] Date 09.01.07 14:55 UTC
I wanted to cut their food down and I though feeding once a day would be more suitable than feeding two tiny meals per day..rather than cutting the meal into two..

does that make sense?

Hi,

Personally I think you'd be better feeding two small meals a day than one bigger one, maybe put her on a light food if it is weight you're worried about.  It's better for their digestive system to be fed twice a day and it may sort out the problem.

Hi Lucy!!

The fact it is large may in fact be adding to your problem, as a dog won't usually soil it's sleeping place, so if the crate is too large it allows her to defecate and still be comfortable.

What breed is she as some breeds are less fussy at how far they need to be from their toilet area for comfort. My next door neighbours JRT will happily poo her crate, a friends Yorkie likewise even though both have ready access to the garden at nearly all times..
- By Blondi [eu] Date 10.01.07 15:26 UTC
shes a very naughty SBT.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 10.01.07 15:35 UTC
Not one of the usual hard to housetrain types then.

Lets hope the two mels a day does the trick.
- By Blondi [eu] Date 10.01.07 15:38 UTC
she has always been fine, even as a puppy she NEVER soiled in the house, shes always been out in the garden.

We'll stick with the two meals ans see how she gets on.

Thank you
