Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Cocking his leg in home
- By ange [gb] Date 04.01.07 13:13 UTC
Sam is almost three and a couple of weeks ago he cocked his leg in home on the patio curtains and carpet. I just thought it was a lapse  in concentration but he did it again this morning. I don't understand why he should suddenly start doing this in home, if anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.

Has another dog been in your house?  Copper does this in our house only after another dog has been in, it's a territory thing and he has to mark it as his own.  He'll do it in other people's houses as well if I don't watch him if they've got a dog or had a dog visiting.  He never goes indoors normally - he's very clean.  I just wash the area down with a solution of washing powder and hot water when it happens to get rid of the smell.  Someone else will come along soon with more advice :)

..as well as it could be remarking an area another dog has marked if you've had one in the house do also check his health too..there are several health reasons a dog could start to do this. Hopefully he is just being lazy..once he's done it once with a a lapse  in concentration he could well do it again so need reminding not to and the area given a good clean.

Is there a bitch in season in the  area or have you been in contact with one. My old boy would do this when my girls were in season once they finished he would stop.
Remember to clean the area with bio soap other wise he will keepgetting the smell and want to return.
Also agree with other post check for water infection just nip a sample down to the vet if you are worried.

Thanks for getting back to me. We do have a spayed bitch as well but no other dog has been in the house. Maybe I didn't get rid of the smell last time so I'll have another go at cleaning the area. He's  not normally allowed unattended in that room but he likes to have a wander when he can but hes never done anything like that before. I think maybe I should let him go in and just watch him so I can remind not to do it if I catch him in the act.

often if there is a room dogs are not often allowed in they will mark their territory.

My nearly 4 yrs old GSD has only once weed in the house. I couldn't believe it! I was on holiday & my daughter had a girlfriend in her bedroom. This friend did have a dog at home. Apparently Zak jumped on the bed (after she had gone) & deliberately weed on it! I was very shocked when my daughter told me, but also decided it must have been a 'territory' thing & that he was covering the smell of my daughter's friend & her dog! I can take him to houses where dogs live & he doesn't do it. I do keep my eye on him now though (just incase). Never say never!
