Hi - I wonder if anyone can help?
My 4 year old Grandson developed chicken pox last Friday. Everything has gone along quite normally with the spots beginning to scab over as of yesterday and he's been fine in himself. Well, today around lunch time he had large areas of raised spots appear - very much like hives! My daughter took him to the doctor who was a little baffled but prescribed Piriton liquid. This evening more have appeared but they can disappear again within 10 minutes. I telephoned NHS direct who were very helpful but they seem to think it is an allegic reaction to something. Nothing has changed in his routine whatsoever and we're completely baffled as to what may have caused it. My daughter took on a stray cat about 6 weeks ago - do you think he may be allergic to the cat? Would it take this long for an allergy to appear?
Thanks in advance
Sandra :)
Allergies tend to me more immediate. Could he be allergic to any medicine taken for the chicken pox? If the doctor didn't know what it was I'd be tempted to ask for a referral if it goes on for much longer. The hospital could do blood tests to try to find out what it is.

Could it be a heat rash? If he's got a temperature from the chicken pox it's a slight possibility. My daughter used to get a heat rash if she had a temperature.
Or could he have become allergic to the washing powder? Even if mum hasn't changed powders the formula could have changed and this can cause an allergic reaction.
Hi thanks for your replies.
He was on Junior disprol Saturday and Sunday but since then he's been fine, no temperature.. As he hadn't even started itching we hadn't even used any Calamine. Too be honest I am getting a little worried because more and more of these raised blister type things are appearing and they are very itchy, they are about 4" in diameter now on his back, front and neck, so now he's covered in Calamine. He's absolutely fine in himself - NHS said only to worry if he starts wheezing or breathing rapidly, which he hasn't at all. I wonder if he's allergic to the chicken pox!!

Hi sandra,
oh the poor pickle :(
Have a look at this
Urticaria given his history my money would be on this! (without being able to see him)
(I get it on response to certain meds too)
Sounds a bit like flea bites IMO.
Especially as they have only appeared recently. Cat flea bites can cause allergic reactions of this degree.
The colder weather could mean the central heating is on more which seems to heighten any flea problem.
Would recommend at least giving the cat a good dose of frontline,or any thing along those lines, wash any fabrics, treat the whole house basically. Not forgetting any cuddly toys children may have lying around. Pay attention to skirting boards as the little buggers can breed to enormous proportions in the nice dark warm areas.
Just a suggestion, not a judgment or critisim (SP) I would at least give it a go to rule it out.
Hope things settle down soon.

Thanks HG that link is spot on!! I'm sure that's exactly whats happening with him! Poor little lamb, though at this moment in time they've all gone again! Weird eh? Now I guess it's a process of elimination. Thanks for that :)
Thanks Julie - LOL I didn't take it as a critisism - I'm grateful for any help :)

my son use to get hives as well when he eat any food or drink with yellow or orangan colouring e11 plus he use to get them as well when he went down with a sore throat,
it may not be the cat.????
Ahhh now that's interesting Briedog! He had a sore throat and has had 2 Honey and Lemon strepsils today ~ I wonder... Thanks I'll check it out. :)
Hi
My daughter at 2 ended up witha severe allergic reaction to mouth thrush which came up in the big red lumps mainly on her chest & back.

If you are worried take him to the hospital, Bronwyn got blister like lumps come up and then they went again, turned out she was allergic to nuts. If you speak to your doctor they can send him for a blood test to check if he is allergic to anything.

Hi - Thanks for your replies :)
Everything was back to normal today, although he did have a bad night last night. Funny thing is the chicken pox haven't bothered him at all.
We'll definitely investigate further if it continues.
Thanks again
Sandra :)
Briedog, what do you mean "it may not be the cat.????" This looks as if you are mickey taking. I was trying to offer advice as i myself suffered badly with what sounded like these raised lumps that would itch then disappear shortly after, they would grow to the size of a 10p if more than one bite in area. Long story short, in my case it WAS the cat.
I am sorry if i may have taken it the wrong way, did take a while to decide whether to ask.
I thought maybe you hadnt read the bit at the bottom of the post about the stray.
If im over reacting i can apologise, one of those days i guess (hormones).
regards julie.
>This looks as if you are mickey taking
Think you've got the wrong end of the stick. Briedog was just offering an alternative explanation :)
Chicken Pox is a nasty virus and can in itself cause knock on effects, for example when my nephew had Chicken Pox the virus attacked the platelets in his blood

Not suggesting this had happened to your nephew because the symptoms are very different just saying that he might have reacted to something he hasn't before because of the virus. Hope he's feeling better today, sounds like he is.
Psssssst! Julie!!Step inside!your in need of some seratonins, sort them hormones out a treat! bless! ;) :D ;)
ok ok im sorry, brand new day and all that. Think its post christmas come down too, im my own worst enemy at this time of year. I feel a right dill now.
Huskygal, im loving the idea off stepping inside, probably have to roll me out though me thinks !!!!!! what a wonderful idea, mmm for medicinal purposes though i could get away with it.
Briedog, am on my knees begging forgiveness as i type. I read some posts often when things get a touch heated and can understand where misunderstandings come from, theres not much expression in writing is there. Guess im now guilty of the same.
Again sorry, and will go and beat myself with rolled up newspaper hahaha.
Regards juliex
