Hi guys
Wondered if anyone can help. My partner is self employed.
On christmas day he walked to the local corner shop to get a loaf of bread, he felt a blow to the head and fell to the floor where he was repeatedly jumped on and kicked as the person wanted money! He suffered a broken colar bone, broken thumb, dislicated shoulder, various cuts to the body and server bruising! all for the £1.30 he was carrying.
Does anyone know if you can claim sick pay when self employed? He has to be of work for at least six weeks and could be longer as he may need physio too! He is the only income person in the household and its going to be a bit of a struggle? anyone got any ideas?

What a horrible thing to have happened..............hope he's fit and well very soon.
Obviously I don't know what arrangements were made when he went self-employed but does he not have any personal health insurance ?.
I think anybody who is self-employed is advised to provide themselves with cover if they are unable to work.
Hi
So sorry to hear that, thats dreadful. I hope he recovers soon.
All he will be able to claim is statutory sick pay (SSP) and im afraid it doesnt amount to much. Its approximately £12 per day as far as I am aware. This would probably be claimed through the local job center. I think you should talk to them anyway as you may find that there are other benefits that he is entitled to if you ask the question. Im not sure how incapacity benefits work but he may be entitled to them.
Sorry its not better news.

Unfortunatly he is only entiltled to SSP. If he has health insurance it may pay to claim on that. Any other benifits will be means tested I am afraid. If the perpatrators were caught then he could claim for loss of earnings but if they have no money it's doubtfull he would get anything. The criminal injuries board may be able to help?

SSP is only payable to an employee S/employed people claim Incapacity benefit

Awww, I am so sorry for you, him really. There really are some B...Sods out there!

Karen

Sorry, I haven't a clue about SSP for self-employed, but, I would be asking the question whether he could claim for victim compensation (cannot think of the correct wording) just know that there is a fund out there for victims of crime even when the culprit hasn't been caught.
Hope that he recovers quickly, terrible that he should be in this position.

Just done a search. The claim I was talking about is known as CICA. Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority. Have a look at their website. Good luck.

He should get a medical cert from the hospital to cover him from the date of the attack to a date he can see his GP for another one & contact the local DWP & make a claim asap for
Incapacity Benefit from the date of the attack
Yes, CICA will help your partner.
Absolutely terrible, my thoughts are with you, what a shocking thing to happen, hope that he will soon be recovered, Saudi -Arabia have the right idea with regards to criminals!!!!

Unfortunately, I went to CICA after an attack - won't go into detail - but your partner will need police and medical evidence for them to consider a payment.
