Hi
Has anyone got any ideas for a recreational chew toy or bone for Molly, my 18 month old ebt?
She chews raw hide so quickly it turns into mush & I have to pull it out of the back of her mouth. Bones she just cracks & any chew toys is demolished within minuets!
Molly has a dog tyre that I put her bisuits in when I go out, (she throws it in the air to get the biscuits out of the middle), but she doesn't attemped to chew it!
I feel sorry for her that she has nothing to chew or knor on.
Thanks
Anne

I would give her raw knuckle bones, mine can eat the straight part of the leg bones very quickly and they do occasionally throw up lots of little sharp bits from them  But knuckle bones they knaw for ages as they don't break up the same way :)

what about a ragger rope toy soaked in something nice like gravy and left to dry out so it tastes meaty but isn't soaking wet.

A friend of mine does this, he soaks raggers and then freezes them for his lot, they love them :) I couldn't do it unfortunately as my youngster already eats raggers and rope toys, imagine how much worse she would be if I soaked them in gravy

:D
Thanks for all your help..I'll try the raggers, under supervision at first!

Anne what types of rec bones have you tried? I have yet to see a dog totally consume a beef marrow bone, although you may have a problem with cracked teeth if she is a super power chewer. There are strong enough bones out there for you're dog,you just have to find them :D Maybe join a raw feeding group and get some ideas from there.I think there's a site called ukrmb.co.uk or something like that. You should be able to get loads of great ideas. I would do away completely with raw hide and anything like like that, they are unhealthy and can so easily cause choking and blockages :(
I agree that dogs need stuff to chew and gnaw on,it's important for both their mental and physical well being. I have dogs, that unless it's real food eg bones then they want nothing to do with it,rubber and plastic etc do nothing for them, cant say i blame em' :p

You have obviously not seen many dogs Ktee, I have seen several dog totally consume a beef marrow bone, many of them mine!
Some dogs are far more powerful chewers than others the EBT being one of them.
OP good luck, there are dogs out there that can destroy car tyres whilst still on the car!

My long past pack once chewed up the tyre of a tractor! It belonged to a landscape gardener who was doing some work for us and he didn't know whether to be amused, bemused or confused that they could do such a thing!

Then you should meet my IWs, past and present. My current boy reduces an ox knucle bone to a bloody smear in 10 minutes flat. I've always worried about the damage a completely ingested bone could do but reckon the enjoyment factor and the effect on teeth a reasonable trade off.

I'm not sure wer'e talking about the same types of bones Jas?? My dogs do a good job of annihilating knuckle bones too.
The beef marrow bones i'm talking about are the long thick ones with big knobs on either end,and weigh a good 2 or 3kg and when cut straight down the centre are filled with marrow. They are sometimes called femur bones, but are completely different to knuckle bones.

My dogs can eat leg bones too Ktee. I prefer to give them knuckle bones as they tend to grind them up whereas the leg bones they crack up and I often find sharp pieces lying around. That said I buy the Landywoods bags of bones so they do get leg bones but only under supervision, the knuckle bones I can leave down without really worrying about.

Wolfies can deal with femurs in short order but I don't give them for the reasons chaumsong states.

My GSP's quite a chewer. Kongs work well with him - not the red ones, he can chew bits off those - but the big black (they're the tougher ones) King Kong types stuffed with food. He can eat entire raw marrow bones - but it does take him several hours!! We had to give up on those cos they make him constipated and give him colitis

but some dogs are fine with them and they make good recreational chew toys if they suit - I got mine from the local butcher. HTH. :)
He's also got a huge nylon chew bone which cost about £14 as he chews bits off the smaller ones, but that one's lasted. Afraid I can't remember who makes them, I'll let you know if I remember the name. I think I've seen them in Pets At Home, enormous heavy things, green in the middle. I've forgotten where I got his now! (senility, I think).

Was it one of
these munrogirl? They also do a few bones especially for strong chewers like
this one. My dog loves his and it lasts him for weeks.
Wow they do look strong...I'll try & get one for Molly tomorrow!
Thanks!

Let us know how she gets on with it. I'm sure there will be other bull breed owners along who would like a review! :-D

I bought my EBT a Nylabone today...the BIg One, beef flavour..it cost £12.99!!!
She loves it, she has managed to 'shave' some of it off, but the packet said this may happen & the 'shavings' can be digested ok. After 10mins there were signs of blood on the bone & the cream carpet! I guess that's like us when we clean our teeth sometimes, the bleeding has stopped now. I wont leave her with it alone just in case. So hopefully it was a good buy!

That's the very one! Well found.

My rotty had one of those 'extra tough, non destructible' bones for xmas- and pretty much destroyed it within a day

In fact the only thing he hasn't wrecked yet is the big black kong!
