Hi All,
I have a 2 year old German Spitz last night at raining i noticed that his eyes seem to have a blue colour(normally dark brown). I am really worried as I know the breed can have eye problems and over the last month or so sometimes i think he deosn't recognise us? I will make an appointment at the vets this week but I was hoping for some advice prior to that as I don't think I could cope with bad news!
Thanks in advance
Angela

Whether good or bad news you will cope with it, only your vet and subsiquent eye specialist will be able to give you a real diagnosis, I don't think I would like to guess though a cataract is an obvious choice, ( which may be able to be operated on) it may even be nothing at all.

My mum's terrier cross has terrible eyes she is under 6, but she copes so well, she is no different, she does not recognise anyone from a distance except for me, but only if I have my hair down :-D her hearing is top notch she still walks and plays the same, she will probably go blind but will be loved and cared for and still live her life more or less as she does now.  It is amazing how well we all cope with our animals and their problems.

I hope that you have good news, don't panic!  Let us know there are many on this site with eye impaired dogs and plenty of helpful advice if your dog should have problems. Hopefully it is nothing at all. :-) Keep us informed.

We had a dog many years ago who went blind in both eyes and we had  no idea until a vets visit for something entirely different. He didn't bump into things, came back to right in front of me on recall and his behaviour was no different at all. We were utterly amazed when the vet said he had no vision at all and believe that as his sight went so gradually he just adapted to it.

It's amazing how adaptable they can be - good luck for your visit.

are you sure its blue and not green? my black dog has very dark brown eyes and they often sort of glow green in the background- vet said that it was normal and its just the reflection of the retina (i think thats what he said)

What breed do you have? Our shelties have a red reflex like a person (ie 'red eye' on photos) but the deerhounds have a green/white reflex and I've never heard a satisfactory explanation for the difference.

I think it could be to do with general pigmentation. I've noticed that black-spotted dals' eyes reflect green/white, while the liver-spotted ones reflect red.

Sounds reasonable. Thanks JG. :)
