Hi Terri, I use the CHV Vaccine and have done since 2003, it was 1st introduced in April 2003 by Merial...

Wont go into boring details but this might help you make your decision....

Mated one of my girls... she missed or so I thought... mated her again following season... she resorped... following season I used the vaccine and had 3 large strong healthy pups...

Since then I have used the Vaccine on all my mating... only 3 since 2003... 1st girl, 11 pups, 1 died, the rest were good stong and healthy.... 2nd girl was original girl who again produced 3 good strong healthy pups... 3rd girl produced 10 healthy pups all survived....

Now... I had a maiden girl, who does not mix with the other due to a fall out over a peice of ice... (memory lingers on :(  )  I mated her without using the vaccine.... she whelped on 9th october BUT... she was carrying 6 pups.... one born dead, not developed, no hair, nose not formed and tounge still attached to upper palate... 2 born dead fully formed... 3 survived but one has megaesophagus.

As someone who literally preaches about the use of the CHV vaccine, I cannot believe how stupid I was to think this girl would be safe....

I will NEVER ever NOT use it again :(

I wonder if some breeds benefit more than others , if some breeds are being more affected by the virus than others or if geographical areas are more affected.. I have talked about it with other breeders in my own breed , some have used it some don't.  I have read a bit on it and read the posts and discussions we have had on here about it.

I haven't used it myself (as yet) but I guess I have been fortunate to have only had 1 still born puppy in 6 litters. The one still born I could hear a weaker slower heart from about 6 weeks gestation when I listened with my stethoscope so actually expected a still born.

If I had a lost litter I would probably give it a go as a preventative.  I guess it can't harm you.

At what point is the vaccine used Is it before mating or during pregnancy? and How many do they need is it a single or a course?  Last time I mated my bitch she only had 1 puppy but when I had her scanned the vet said she may have had more as there were dark patches on screen, so if she had have had it could 1 have survived?

There is a very good thread on this subject written by Kayc http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?pid=524500;hl=chv;hlm=and#pid524500

I know a breeder who has used this after her bitches losing litters and has since had 2 beautiful litters.
I have a rotti who has failed to produce twice now (even though she had a litter 2 years ago) and a lab who has reasorbed pups recently.

I have asked my vet about this and will probably be using it in the future.

Well is she, what are the signs looking like, are you getting her scanned or just gonna wait and see, ????????????????????
- By Chocaholic [gb] Date 31.12.06 01:30 UTC
I used it on my bitch last time and she produced a healthy litter of 6. This time I never got around to getting the 1st one but she had the 2nd one last Thursday. I was told that even one vacc is beneficial.

didnt know i was going to mate her either at this time she came into season 3 months early, it was a quick think about to find a dog and it was the day before going to sweden only one mating which lasted 23 mins. well if she has any pups they may be black.or black/white like tangle or white or cream, dont think i get brown this time.

tangle may be in 2008 when she 3 year old..you can come down and see the litter.keep you posted

Something I thought interesting and yes it could just be purely another coincidence. My freind mated her bitch a few weeks ago to a very well proven dog and it missed. 1st time she has ever had one miss and the 1st time she used the Herps vaccine. Bitch has had pups before.

Time was right everything.  Wonder if anyone had had a similar experience.

MY bitch didn't have the vaccine first time and missed, after 5 premates, possibly wrong timing. 2nd time, she had the vaccine (1st & 2nd) and had a litter of 6 (different dog). This time she didn't have the 1st vaccine as I didn't think she needed it, I then changed my mind and she had the 2nd vaccine 8 days before pups born as I thought even one vaccine would be good, she had 8 puppies.
On another note, I fell out with my Vets of 10 years over the vaccine as I was originally told that she could just have the 2nd vaccine. When I phoned to make the appointment I was then told that it was a complete waste of time and they refused to order it in for me  I told them that a lot of breeders I know were using it and after reading up (Kayc's written piece on here etc) that even would vaccine would be good. The reply was " so you're saying breeders know more than Vets" On that sour note I said I would get the vaccine done at another practice, they said that would be OK. A few days later I got a letter saying they had closed my account and would not provide any emergency care for my due to whelp bitch

That's not so good of your vet.  has their been a misunderstanding?

I am all for everything that helps the dogs , I just always look at it from all directions . :-)
- By Chocaholic [gb] Date 09.01.07 15:26 UTC
There wasn't a misunderstanding as far as I was concerned. I asked them that if I wanted to get it done would I have to go to another Vets they said yes. When she had the previous vacs it had beren done at another vets too and there was no problem them. Probably the stroppy receptionist I spoke too.
