We have a 2 year old beagle, that we have started showing and doing very well with, but we have been told he is too thin,  whats the best way to bulk him up without just giving him loads of extra food ????

Have you seen the thread in Feeding called Mulling Over.  A few people on there mention Breast of Lamb as a good source for putting on weight.

If you type in putting on weight in a search it comes up with quite a few older topics I have added a link to one of them underneath.

Hope this helps, I can't help much as I feed mine half and half.

>Problem is he has only EVER had dried food,<

Is this because he is not used to fresh foods,or because he gets unhealthy table scraps which cause the runs?

It doesnt make sense to me that fresh wholesome meats, veggies etc would give a dog the runs, but eating nothing but dry kibble is keeping him 100% healthy

I would start by adding some raw green tripe,it is great for adding body plus it has an abundance of enzymes which amongst other things help them to efficiently digest and utilise the food,i would start adding small amounts of grilled chicken, beef, fish, lamb and veggies working your way up to decent amounts and then maybe start adding very small amounts of pasta and rice(remember dogs are primarily meat eaters).

I would make it my priority to start getting healthy fresh foods into your dog,his overall health and vitality will benefit greatly and you will no doubt start to see healthy weight gain particularly muscle mass, which i should add goes hand in hand with adequite exercise,How much does he get daily?

What dry food is he on now? I have heard people have had success with arden grange for putting on weight. However a better food IMO with a nice protein to fat content is timberwolforganics wild n natural, which is what i'm feeding my crew on at the moment.

very rarely gets anything other than his dry food which is pro-plan.

update - just returned from vets, says hes got a bacterial infection.(reason for the runs) been given tablets and instructions to feed rice and chicken.

Vet said he is a perfect weight. However, he does have excessive tuck-up. Some extra weight may help make him more in proportion ?

His picture is on the above link. Maybe you can see what i mean

Can you put the link to your website page in your profile please as it's against the Terms of Service to post a link to your own webpage on the boards

Thanks :-)

My 3 yr old GSD needed a bit of extra weight, he also has a very delicate tummy. I was amazed at the difference, in only a few weeks he has put weight on & the raw food does suit him. All I can say is try it, I used to give Zak 2 feeds of dry kibble per day. I have substituted his morning meal for 2 or 3 chicken wings & a piece of breast of lamb. I have also been giving him rib bones & he looks so much better.
