I've read a few postings on here about frontline and it seems a lot of you use garlic instead. What is the best way to give this to a 4 month puppy--crushed fresh clove? capsule? capsule contents mixed in food? also how much do I give?
She has had 2 doses of stronghold so far which the vet said is not as strong as frontline but therefore it's advisable to give it more often.
Also what do you do about prevention of other parasites which would be included in the frontline treatment?
Grateful for advice, as ever,thanks
I give one, non smelling tablet, to my 2 year old, per day. As it is herbal, I dont believe you can overdose them.

not sure about the dose of Garlic but most people still use a puppy appropriate wormer such as drontal (make sure you get the right strength.) you can buy this online from
here or you can always go to your vet as they usually supply seperate wormers too.
I've always understood that too much garlic can be toxic for dogs? Hopefully someone else will clarify.
i think i will stop giving my dog garlic!! scared myself

I wouldn't stop giving Garlic keisha if you usually do it, it will probably vary from dog to dog how much they can tolerate and as yours seems well on this amount i would stick to it

You should never assume because something is herbal you cannot overdose. They have safe levels and side effects just as pharmaceutical drugs do.

oh dear. not sure what to do now! just looked at link--my last dog died from haemolytic anaemia, but I didn't give her garlic supplements. I expect its ok to give it in small amounts, not sure what a small amount is though!

I have quite happily given garlic tablets to all my girls and never had a problem with fleas or any signs of anemia in 18 years :) I give the odourless capsules once a day :)
Thanks for the link Lucy. However, it seems to imply that no garlic should be given and I've given garlic for years with no ill effects and I know many other people do as well. I give my dogs a 300mg tablet of garlic each a day. The human dose is 3-6 tablets daily.

I think it implies that small amounts in pet food have shown no effects and so I would say it will be the same with supplements ! I feed raw so my lot don't have any other sources of garlic in their diet :)

Just a thought the article refers to Garlic as a plant & the whole plant however there is no mention of garlic powder or oil ? my dogs have garlic perles(the smelly ones)& I've just won some vetzyme tabs with garlic
I cannot see a company producing something for dogs that is poisonous to them

Just to ask, do you actually have a problem with fleas and ticks in the area or is it JUST prevention? My dogs haven't had any flea or tick treatment for years and years (in fact several of them have never had it once in their lives even) and they've not had fleas or ticks either. :) I'd only treat if it was necessary. :)
wouldn't have thought there is a problem in the area, we border on greenbelt but no sheep anywhere in sight! Dogs around here are walked in woodland and playing fields and 99% of people I meet are "very nice" and their dogs very well looked after. Maybe I will just keep a close watch for any little visitors and just give her a worming tab now and again

I give my dogs a clove of garlic daily from 12 weeks old. If you do not wish to do this then I can recommend Dorwest Herbs who produce garlic and garlic and fenugreek tablets specifically for dogs.
I have never used any commercial sprays on my dogs (I do however spray the car and house twice a year) and my dogs do not have fleas.
Garlic is also a fabulous antiseptic, antiviral, antifungus as well as antiparasitic addition to the diet.
Heinz haemolytic anaemia is more of a worry with onions. Dogs are very unlikely to consume enough garlic to do themselves any harm.
