I have 2 afghans, Delilah (5)and Zorro(3) .Delilah is at her breeders on holiday as she is in season, and Zorro is entire. Delilahs mother is here for the time being to keep Zorro company. They get on well, play together, sleep together and seem happy. Zorro seems cheerful, and healthy. BUT he has started howling in the evenings! Sits down, tips his head up and goes for it big style:rolleyes: He is wagging his tail at the same time:eek: It is a deep, baying howl, much deeper than his usual squeaky sort. It sort of seems like he is enjoying it....could he just be experimenting with this new sound he can make? Is howling necessarily a sign of unhappiness?
I should hate to think he is sad:confused:

I'm surprised that you haven't had hound howls before now. :) My lot do a barber shop quintet morning and evening regular as clockwork. The IW sings bass to the deerhounds' tenors and baritones. They often sit in a rough circle and aways have heads thrown back while they do it - and they give every indication of thoroughly enjoying their sing in. My guess is that Zorro is perfectly happy singing and that he has just found his voice. Don't be surprised if Delilah joins in when she comes home! :)

Thanks for that reassurance...I had been concerned as he doesnt make a regular deal of it, and now hes a bit obsessed! I thought maybe he is missing Delilah.....he has trashed his toys sin protest since she has been gone.

Hi pinklilies,
In the wild, wolves howl to call the 'pack' in and to help guide the straglers home.
In Zorro's mind Delilah is part of his 'pack', and the fact that she is in season and he is an 'entire' male in his prime, make it all the more urgent the she comes home.  So maybe he is just sending out signals to show her where he is.
It will be interesting to see if the howling stop when Delilah come home at the end of her season.
