Hi all,
Well I never thought this would happen to me but there we go! On Sunday I took my lot for an extra long run round the big field I go to and they loved it. I kept an eye out for other dogs and owners - there was 1, so I kept my lot away. The labs are too friendly but my JR is a chopsy little so and so. Anyway about 10 mins later I decided to put them all back on the lead ready for home time. 2 more women came onto the field with 2 dogs - not on leads and one of them shot over and startled my JR. You can imagine what happened - he did his protective bit and there was an awful noise as they scarpped. While all this was going on a GSD appeared and charged over to see the girls. I had to drop the leads or my wrist would have been broken. I then waded in to seperate my JR and the intuder and got bitten - not by mine but by the other dog. It's owner then came over and said sorry. I was speachless! Too stunned to tell her that her dog had bitten me and if she knew it to be aggressive should keep it on a lead.
Fortunately I am up to date with my tetanus shots but it's put me off. The GSD was ok, I know him so just grabbed him and waited for his elderly owner to get him.
Horrible walk!

Are you saying the dog was aggressive because it bit you when you were breakking them up or because it defended itself when your JR went for it ?
I've lost count of the times I've been bitten breaking up dog fights, but it's because my dog doesn't like other dogs charging up to him & will go for them not normally because the other dog is aggressive, bites are mostly accidental.
Should add that my GSD is next to me when this happens and a warning has been given
Sorry didn't phrase that very well. I forgot to mention that when I first saw the woman and she saw my lot she immediately grabbed her dog's collar - which is one of the reasons I put my lot back on their leads.
I'm not blaming the dog - I think if I had been flipped on my back and had a set of teeth round my throat I would bite anything that came in the way also, I was more shocked. From her initial body language I guessed that her dog didn't get on with others - hence saying about the lead.
I have no problem with the GSD - as I said, I know him and he likes to say hi and glue his nose up my girls' bums. He is fine with me holding him for his owner who always apologises and then promplty tells his dog off (yeah like that will work).
Very sorry that you have got bitten, what a horrible end to a nice walk you were all having, the dog that bit you as you have already worked out probably did it unknowingly, when dogs are fighting they don't differentiate between human hand and another dogs teeth, they are in fight mode and wo behold the human who accidently gets in the way. You have to be very careful how and where you grab a dog whilst in a fight to avoid getting hurt yourself.
The GSD appears to be harmless, though obviously not great at recall :-D If you get the time to react next time,(I know it is difficult with other loose dogs around) I would lead your JR first and then your labs, JR's are notorious for barking and being the tough guy at approaching dogs, (not all but a large majority, with their size comes extra bravado :-D) which puts other dogs on guard immediately, so lead him first and get him to heal.
Shake off what happened and get ready for hopefully a nice trouble free walk today.
Thank you - I will try that in future.
