Hi,I HAVE JUST BECOME THE PROUD OWNER OF A BEAUTIFUL LAB PUPPY,8 AND 1/2 WEEKS OLD.HAVING NOT HAD A DOG BEFORE I WILL PROBABLY BE A PAIN TO ALL OF YOU WITH WHAT YOU WILL PROBABLY THINK ARE VERY STUPID QUESTIONS,SO I WILL APOLOGISE NOW FOR MY FUTURE BEHAVIOUR!!
PUP HAS SETTLED VERY WELL,I JUST WANTED TO ASK ABOUT HIS FOOD.BREEDER HAS GIVEN ME A BAG OF GILPA PUP,WHICH HE LOVES,EQUIVALENT IS JAMES WELLBELOVED.I WAS WONDERING IF THIS IS WHAT IS GIVING HIM SUCH A STRONG BAD BREATH!! AND POPS,IT DOES SEEM TO BE GETTING STRONGER BY THE DAY! IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO ABOUT THIS?AND DOES IT MEAN THAT THE FOOD IS NOT AGREEING WITH HIM-ALTHOUGH HE EATS IT ALL,I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT AS LONG AS HE IS OK.

Most Labs will eat enything and everything so it is possible it may not agree with him. However if the breeder has fed him this diet then it should be OK. If you do change over to something else try to make it a Holistic diet. Burns is good and James Wellbeloved also, of course you could follow the BARF diet. Raw meaty bones and fresh veg/fruit. Not using this diet I can not give you information about it but there are lots of websites that can, and no doubt lots of champdog users will be pleased to explain it to you. I myself use a complete food (Burns) with raw green tripe for my Bernese. What ever you do make any changes gradually over a week or so. When you find something he likes and is fit and well on then stick to it, not chopping and changing every few weeks.

My dog could clear a room in seconds with 'pops' when she was a pup. When I changed her food a few months later her tummy settled down straight away (friends even started calling round again :D). When I changed her food I did it gradually mixing the new with the old and each day increasing the newer food. Took a few days to change over. she still passes wind from time to time but not often and no where near as deadly.
Just wanted to say thanks for info, puppy has settled and i am slowly changing over to JWB which he seems to love.
Can i just ask another question though, todo with feeding times,i am following the breeders advice and feeding 3 times a day,8.30,2.30 and 8.30pm.But when i have read various puppy traing books they seem to say that the last meal should be about 4!! Am i doing it wrong?
I tend to keep my pups on 4 meals a day until they are about 3 months, but if your pup can manage on 3 then that's fine. I spread the meals through the day as evenly spaced as possible. Probably the suggestion of the last feed at 4 pm is to reduce the likelihood of "going" overnight, but I'm just guessing. Just do what seems to suit you and your pup and if your breeder is experienced, then follow their suggestions.

My pups usually leave home on three meals a day morning lunch and tea, times are flexible!
They also have a few bic's or a chewwy at bedtime to help them settle.
I think you can move times around to suit your lifestyle and three meals a day is fine if he is thriving on that.
Just remember not to exersice for an hour before or after mealtimes to help prevent bloat.

It's a long time from 4pm until morning! I do tend to give my first meals a little earlier and the last a little later than you but I think you are along the right lines in evenly spacing the meals although at 9 weeks I think I would prefer to split it over 4 meals still.
Thanks for all the advice and info x
