Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dog 'coughing/snorting' ??
- By Star [in] Date 27.10.06 11:10 UTC
Our GWP has got up this morning and is making intermittent snorting cough like sounds. Its nothing like a kennel cough, more nasally. She shakes a bit when it happens. Then is okay for a while. Has eaten her brekkie but am wondering what it is. She was fine till now. Her throat seems clear. Any thoughts?
If it persists will take her to vet but she seems ok otherwise.

She may have something stuck up her nose, a grass seed or something similar. There is a caterpillar which lives in pine forests that will go up dogs noses, but I've never heard of it in Britain, only Spain and France.
I should take her to the vet if she if still doing it. Let us know what happens.

We had a few bouts early afternoon but seems okay again now. i did find something on Google about 'reverse sneezig' but seems more common in small dogs:confused:

It's not just small dogs that get this.  My old x-breed (no longer with us) used to do this quite a bit.  Neve caused him any problems and he lived till he was 14!
If you're worried, contact your vet and see what they have to say, but if it is this reverse sneezing, don't worry about it!

Inverted sneezing is essentially too much acid in the stomach. People can get it too, happens to me sometimes. :)    My papillon cannot eat any dry complete foods (even when well soaked) as that brings it on at once -with canned food he never gets them. When it happens you can give some lukewarm milk as that will neutralise the acid and stop it. :)

Thanks
We have had one bout this morning so if it happens again will try what you suggest. I keep thinking of the worst things (as you do)
