I'm someone else, who's waiting nervously for the phone to ring.
Two weeks ago, Thor's hips/knees were x-rayed because he'd been limping for a few weeks - and we know we have problems there. We're waiting to see Mr Whitelock, in Hertfordshire, on 7th November. In the meantime, he is on cartrophen, weekly injections.
However he still seems to be in a lot of pain/discomfort/eand very "down" for Thor, and this morning when I took him down for his injection, I said this to our vet. He is running a temperature, and blood tests show that he is anaemic - something he certainly wasn't two weeks ago. So now, bloods have been sent off for analysis, and he is undergoing x-rays of the spleen. The blood tests indciate that we haven't got a liver/kidneys problem - so heavens only knows what is going on :(
Just waiting for the phone call.....

So sorryto hear this :( hope they get to the bottom of it quickly and sort it out, poor boy.

Gee, doesn't that sound like my cat? Minus the pain and limping. I hope you get this sorted out, the "wait and see" part is awful.

Lizzie has phoned, to say tht the xray of the spleen is showing nothing sinister, but the white blood count is rising rapidly. He is staying in overnight, on an antibiotic drip. :(
Needless to say, I'm frantic.
Margot

so Sorry. Loads of healing wishes coming Thor's way.

Oh Margot I am keeping Thor in my thoughts and hope he starts to improve soon. Come on boy you can do it :)
Keep your chin up

Everythings crossed here to.

Don't be frantic. You got him in early and the antibiotic will help make him feel better. A virus would be harder to treat, I think, as antibiotics have no effect on them. I know it's hard not to worry. Think of all the good wishes going out to Thor.

Just phoned the vets. Apparently he has eaten some chicken & rice and does appear a bit brighter. He will remain on the ab/b drip overnight, and I'm to ring in the morning. Lizzie (the vet) lives on the premises, so I'm fairly "alright" about him being there - if you understand what I mean.
Just don't know what's brought it on - that's the real worry.
Thanks for all good wishes - please keep all fingers & paws crossed for our lad.
Margot
Thinking of you and Thor Margot, as always.........
We haven't had the best day here either......... :-(
PM or phone me if you need anything...........
(((Hugs))),

Fingers crossed that Thor will be well. It's so hard when they have to stay at the vet's.
Fingers and paws crossed here for Thor. Also sending him lots of healing thoughts.

Sorry to hear that Thor's having more problems. I hope there's nothing else wrong. All good wishes.
Sending good wishes for Thor and for you Margot... :)

Hi Margot,
do you have any news this morning? I have been reading your threads recently and i know how you feel, it is an awful time for all concerned and i wish you the best of luck with results for Thor.... {{{hugs}}} to you and your family and of course to Thor...

So sorry to hear this Margot :(
How is he this morning?
By Lokis mum
Date 27.10.06 12:46 UTC
Well, he had a good night - ate a whole tin of the vet'sconvalesecence food (the sort he wouldn't eat at home ) - and has been peeing and poohing well - although this morning he did have the runs a bit - but not enough to be concerned about.
The problem is the bloods: last evening, after a steroid injection in the morning, his red count was up, but this morning it is down again. Lizzie is doing some inhouse tests -which she herself admits aren't as conclusive as the lab ones, but will possibly be an indication to see whether we've got some sort of auto-immune reaction. Bloods have been sent off to the labs, and hopefully the results might be back by this evening.
In the meantime, he is sitting up, and looking around very inquisitively - so he isn't pining, and hopefully, its a good sign. I shall know more late this afternoon, and hopefully, will be able to bring him home. But I would like to be able to put a label on whatever it is that is a problem now. Poor old boy - he's got through life scot free so far .........

He's home!
We still don't know what is going on - tests done at the surgery are inconclusive so we are still awaiting the lab reports. However, Lizzie has ruled out an internal haemmoraghe (sp??) as his red cell count has not got any lower, so he is on steriods as a precautionary measure. It is beginning to point to an auto-immune problem - which apparently Aussies do have a tendancy towards, and it n be brought on by an external trigger (the knee, for instance - or even castration).
Anyway, he is a lot brighter - and obviously the steroids are giving some pain relief as well - I had to run out of the surgery - because that's what he wanted to do! Lizzie said last night as well, when she took him out for a pee, she was having to run, carrying his drip!
We go back tomorrow, to see if the results are here, and if we have any more news. So, its really still watch this space.
Amazing really - we have six dogs - you wouldn't think that the place would seem empty when one is missing - but it did.
Margot
Hi Margot
So glad he's home and feeling brighter. Fingers crossed
Carina
Bet you're pleased to have him home again :). Hope you manage to get to the bottom of this soon.
I'm so pleased Thor is home :) I will keep my fingers crossed for tomorrow x
Glad to hear he is home again

What is his PCV count at the moment? Glad it has stabilised and isn't dropping any lower :)

glad to hear he's feeling better and is home, hope it's something easily sorted :)

If PCV is the same as ACT (which I think it is) this morning its 26.8 - gone up by .1 since Thursday. But we do have a regenerative red cell count now - which is, I am assured, a good thing.
He seems a lot brighter in himself - had his chicken wing this morning for breakfast, plus yoghurt, and is also putting his foot to the ground more.
Unfortunately despite the samples being marked urgent, lab results aren't back yet :( So, for the weekend, he is on prednisolone 4 x 5mg twice daily -but he's checked the cats' litter trays:rolleyes:, checked that Freya & Loki are keeping their room tidy, and that Beau & Vinnie aren't chewing each others' ears :D
That's more like my boy!
Margot

Oh Margot!
Sounds like Thor's been an absolute Trooper through this!! :)
Sorry to hear its still a waiting game, thats the hardest part sometimes..But relieved to hear he's happy in himself and back home, Atta boy!
*still got everything crossed for you* xx

On a lighter side - Colin (the surgery cat) gave hima good sniff, and Badger (the vet's labrador) wagged her tail at him - so we said he's had the cat scan and lab report :D :D :D :D

Well - I do not know what my bill is finally going to be ......but if I have to pay for Badger's Lab reports and Colin's Cat scans, that part of the bill will be paid in kind ..... Whiskas & Pedigree Chum :D :D :D
His Thorship has been out for a walk today - bouncing around before going - and seems far happier in himself! We're back again on Monday, to repeat the blood tests, and see if the (non Badger) lab reports are back. It just so good seeing him look more like himself - even if he does need a darn good grooming!
Margot

Glad to hear everything's going well for Thor so far. Fingers, toes and anything else appropriate crossed that it keeps going well :)

Been back down to the vets today - lab reports seem to rule out auto-immune disease/leukemia anemia - which is great news! So now we're looking at iron deficiency (this in a dog who loves his tripe & organ meat mix? ) - so more bloods taken.
He is such a trooper - he just sighs - and doesn't even pull his paw back when she takes the bloods - just licks her ear!
I'm convinced that the steriods have helped with pain relief as well - he didn't have the cartrophen injection on Thursday, but we're cutting them back - and we'll hve to see how he goes on! I should have a phone call tomorrow.
He is so much better though :)
Margot
So glad to hear that he is feeling much better

Hopefully they will find the cause of it soon :)

Good Luck with the tests. Here's hopeing and praying Thor is getting better and is bouncing around the fields like a pup soon.
