Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Won't go to the toilet when out.

Shady is now 16 months old, Rottie x GSD, loves agility and going out playing with her frisbee etc, but she will just not do either a wee or a poo when out.
Even if she gets desperate say during an agility class she will just get agitated and stop working and mess about.  But she will still hang on and rush for the garden on our return to relieve herself.
When my husband was alive we used to breed and show and work dogs, since his death I gave up the showing and breeding but in the past 30 odd years of having dogs I have NEVER had this problem.
Its not a problem really unless she gets desperate when we are out but she still won't relent and go.
I have always taught all my dogs to go on command and she will at home but will not when out.  My other dog has no problem and will go wherever we are.
Any ideas why she is like this, its not always because its somewhere different either.  We go to my horse field twice every day where she runs around and chases her frisbee, the agility class is also held in one of my fields thats not in use and where she plays daily but she refuses point blank to relieve herself there or anywhere else different we may go.
I would like to perhaps go for some days out to shows with her but if she won't relieve herself then she will just get wound up and anxious.
She has NEVER been told off for going to the loo just massive praise.

I've only had this problem with pups that go out on their first walks. They quickly caught on. Would it be possible to collect grass, or mud, or similar from the area that she does 'go' on? Maybe smelling her own scent might help. It sounds like she might not feel secure in an area she doesn't usually pee on. She maybe doesn't realise that she is allowed to  ;)

I must admit to having the opposite problem at the moment. My 2 year old bitch is reluctant to go in my garden, but will go anywhere else ;) Walking in a field in the dark is not really feasible so she has to stay outside until she performs. Hopefully she will be fine once she has got over her phantom pregnancy. :) Bitches, who'd have them? ;) :D

I have one of those and it was two days after her first liter before she would go and poo (wees are OK) when she realised she wasn't going to get taken for a walk anytime soon.

She will still hang on and wait for a poo until we go out no matter which time of day I choose to go.

I had one like that. She simply would NOT got anywhere except at home. It was a real nuisance and I can remember walking her for miles when we were away at shows but getting absolutely no result. She must have had an elephant's bladder for she would hold forever. The only comfort I can give you is that my lady got slightly less reluctant to go away from home when she was old - but perhaps by then she couldn't hold as well.

I have one like this too. As I said on another thread, she will only go at home or in water, (river, sea, pond, loch etc) . Very strange but doesn't seem to do her any harm, its a pain though. We reckon she is just too posh to pee and poo in public :D

My old girl (Rottie cross) Has always been like that. She is now 9 1/2.
She will hold all day even if out for the day. Apart from if we are at someones house in their garden where she will go. Anywhere else, she wont.
Makes it easier for cleaning up tho ;)

When my very nice new neighbours moved in about three months ago, we came home that Saturday night to find her and partner armed with a torch standing on the verge by our house having a very meaningful conversation with a small Norfolk terrier. Having made our introductions, she apologised for lurking around suspiciously (she wasn't!) but they were desperately trying to persuade Percy (him being the dog not the partner) to have a wee and a poo since he had point blank refused to do either for the last 24 hours and she feared he'd literally burst if this state of affairs continued for much longer.

The solution was easily found. Go into kitchen and collect a Jack Russell terrier who promptly cocked his leg on the grass by the verge.  An inspection of the evidence resulted in Percy having the largest wee ever seen followed by a trot down the lane for a dump.

I don't know whether this would work for the OP but Percy's need to contribute overcame what was quite clearly a nervous reaction to moving house and I wonder whether it's a trick worth trying if there's a willing widdler who could be pressed into service.

I was told an old show trick is to soak up the wee where they normally 'go' with newspaper and then put it down at the show and "hey presto"  Never tried it tho, both mine will go on command as long as it's not raining :)   Same principle as wee-wee pads I suppose :D :D

Our youngster had an overnight for Midlands County this weekend.  He just won't go outside on walks and finally succumbed at almost lunchtime on Sunday - over 24 hours later   Might try the paper trick.

Our old girl is exactly the same shes fab, obedient, pees on command but just will not go elsewhere  before she retired from showing she would never ever have a full wee it was a sprinkle probably just to ease the full bladder!(and that was after a 12hr wait)
She would wait until we got home even now she is so lazy she has her breakfast goes for a beach walk (never has a pee there) then goes to bed until 3pm'ish gets up has a nosey round goes back to bed then comes down for her dinner  at 5-6pm has a wee finally and thats her day done back to bed!!
She only has 2 wees a day thats it lol always amazes me she must have a cast iron bladder.

I had exactly the same problem, tried staying out for hours, which did not work as it was held in until we got back home.  Even took her out   every 15mins but always managed to pee before we reached the garden boundary.  What cured her was a fortnights holiday in a caravan. (No  bladders that big.)
